What is organic traffic?
Quick answer
Organic traffic means visits to a website that come from unpaid search engine results, such as someone searching on Google and clicking an ordinary listing rather than an ad. In Google Analytics 4 it appears as the "Organic Search" channel.

Why it matters
Organic visitors cost nothing per click, and they arrive with a question the page answers. For many businesses, organic search is the largest single source of new visitors, and it keeps flowing whether or not anyone is running ads that week.
Tracking organic traffic shows whether SEO work is paying off. Because rankings change slowly, the trend over months matters far more than a single week’s number.
A worked example
A small law firm publishes one plain-English guide a week on employment law questions. In January its GA4 Traffic acquisition report shows 1,900 Organic Search sessions a month. By June it shows 6,400, and organic visitors have filled in the contact form 58 times, against 21 in January.
Over the same months, paid search stayed flat at about 2,000 sessions, costing $7,800 a month. The firm’s calculation: the organic growth brings in contacts that would have cost about $9,000 a month in ads, for the cost of writing four articles.
Often confused with
Organic traffic vs direct traffic
"Direct" in GA4 means visits with no known source, such as typed URLs, bookmarks and some apps. Some untracked organic and email visits land in Direct too.
Organic search vs organic social
Organic search is unpaid search results. Organic social is unpaid visits from social media posts. GA4 lists them as separate channels.
Organic vs paid search
Paid search is clicks on sponsored ads, charged per click by PPC. Both come from the same search page.
Tips
- Track organic key events, not just sessions.
- Use Google Search Console for the searches behind organic traffic; GA4 does not show them.
- Compare month over month and year over year to account for seasonality.

Questions about it
- Should a small business start with SEO or PPC?: PPC first if you need customers this month; start SEO now if you can wait 3 to 6 months. Most small businesses end up doing both. A plan…
