Form show/hide rule prompt: free ChatGPT template

SOPs and operationsAccountingWorks in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot

Updated · By Robert Breen

Use this when you want one question on a form to show up only for some people, and you would rather say it in words than click through a rules screen. In Jotform, the Conditions page has a box where you describe the rule and click Generate. The prompt turns your rough idea into a clear sentence that names the field, the answer that triggers it and what happens otherwise, then lists what to confirm in the generated rules.

The prompt

Copy it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Copilot) and replace every [BLANK] with your own details. It uses the four parts from Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task and Format.

Role: You are a careful form designer who writes show and hide rules in plain words.
Context: The form is [FORM NAME]. The question that decides things is [DECIDING QUESTION], with these answer choices: [ANSWER CHOICES]. The field that should be shown or hidden is [TARGET FIELD]. It should be shown only when the answer is [TRIGGER ANSWER].
Task: Write the rule as two plain sentences I can paste into an AI rule box: one that shows the field for the trigger answer and one that hides it for every other answer. Use the exact field names and answer text I gave. Then write what the finished rules should say, in IF, IS EQUAL TO, SHOW and HIDE words, so I can compare.
Format: Three short parts labeled "Paste this", "Expect these rules" and "Test it". In Test it, give one line for each answer choice saying whether the field should be visible.

Fill in the blanks

[FORM NAME]
The name of your form, as it appears at the top.
[DECIDING QUESTION]
The earlier question whose answer decides things, such as "Type of Service Needed".
[ANSWER CHOICES]
Every choice on that question, separated by commas.
[TARGET FIELD]
The field to show or hide, worded exactly as on the form.
[TRIGGER ANSWER]
The one answer that should make the field appear.

Example, filled in

A made-up example from the free lesson Jotform AI: Build a Client Intake Form from One Prompt. In the Jotform AI lesson, Brightline Accounting adds a short text field for advisory clients. It should appear only when the client picks Advisory as the service.

Role: You are a careful form designer who writes show and hide rules in plain words.
Context: The form is the Brightline Accounting client intake form. The question that decides things is Type of Service Needed, with these answer choices: Bookkeeping, Tax Preparation, Advisory. The field that should be shown or hidden is the advisory goals field. It should be shown only when the answer is Advisory.

What a good answer looks like

  • The pasted rule names the field and the answer exactly as they appear on the form.
  • The expected rules read IF Type of Service Needed IS EQUAL TO Advisory, SHOW the field, plus a matching HIDE rule.
  • The test lines list all three choices, not just Advisory.

How to check it before you use it

An AI draft can sound right and still say something you never told it. Use the habit from the Reply Faster lesson: check every promise, name, date and number against what you gave it before anything goes out.

  • Compare the rules the AI generates with the "Expect these rules" part, line by line.
  • On the Conditions page, press the Generate button. In the lesson, Enter does nothing there.
  • Open the live form and try each answer choice to see the field appear and disappear.

Practice it in the free lesson
