Why this matters
A small office usually finds its AI tools from a forwarded list or an ad, then starts a few trials. Each trial costs setup time and a cancellation, and the original job still is not done.
AI directories are a faster way to see what exists, as long as you bring the job with you. In our test, one tool was listed as free in one directory and paid in another, and the real answer was on its own pricing page.
Practice
Do every step yourself in a practice copy of the real tool. It checks your work, and “Do it for me” finishes any step you get stuck on.
What you’ll build

You run a made-up property management office. You write one job in one sentence, then search four free directories for tools that could do it.
You compare what they say, check the finalists on their own pricing pages, and finish with a filled-in scorecard and one tool worth testing. The screens are real public pages, captured October 2026.
What you need
- Nothing to start the practiceThe lesson is a practice copy, and the office in it is made up.
- One job you want to hand offWrite it in one sentence, with the limits that would rule a tool out.
- The Stepthrough AI tools directorySorted by job. It is ours, so check it against the others.
- FutureToolsA large searchable database with price filters. No account needed to search.
- AI Tools DirectorySearch with category and price filters. No sign-in needed.
- AI DirectoriesNewer tools from founders, plus a database of over 300 other directories.
Concepts
Start with one sentence, not one tool
Ours was: turn a 45-minute recorded owner call into notes and to-dos, on Windows laptops, for $0 to start. Every number in it ruled a tool out later.
Without it, a tool that sounds right is hard to reject. Mumble AI sounded right, and its listing says Mac and iOS.
Labels are a starting point
We found Jamie marked Free plan in our own directory and Paid on FutureTools. Filtering FutureTools to Freemium removed Jamie from the list altogether.
Jamie's own pricing page shows a free plan with a 30-minute limit per meeting. So the free label was true, and the plan still could not do this job. Pricing changes, so check the current page.
Featured is about placement
On the directories we used, Featured cards come first. The first one we saw on FutureTools for meeting notes was a tool for building AI agents.
That is a normal way for a directory to pay its bills. Just judge those cards by your sentence, like any other.
30 more AI directories to try
The same search gave 37 tools in our category, 70 on FutureTools, 31 on AI Tools Directory and 2 on AI Directories, so it pays to look in more than one. Two more also searched without a sign-in in our test: Good AI Tools and Best of AI. On October 31, 2026 we also opened each directory below. Each one loaded and looked like a real directory, but we did not check every listing, and many sell paid placement. So bring your one sentence, and check the tool's own site.
For general search: AI Tools Inc, AI Top Tools, AI Toolz Dir, AI Library, AI Tools Capital, AI Tools One, AI Toolboard, AI Trendz, AI TrustList, AI Valley, Appscribed, BAI.tools, BestAITo, BroUseAI, Find My AI Tool, Free AI Tool, LookAITools, ToolAI, ToolFame, Toolio, ToolList and YAATD.
For newer tools and launches: LaunchBoosts, PitchWall, StartupBase, Toolfio and Twelve Tools.
For AI agents: AgentHunter and AI Agent Store. For schools: AI Educator Tools. For a job specific to your industry, the AI Directories database can point you to more.

Quick check
3 questions to check you’ve got it.
1. What should you do before opening a directory?
- Write the job in one sentence, with the limits that matter
- Start a few free trials
- Sort by most popular
Show the answer
Write the job in one sentence, with the limits that matter. The sentence is what let us rule out Jamie and Mumble AI, without a single trial.
2. One directory says Free plan, and another says Paid. What settles it?
- The tool's own pricing page
- Whichever directory is bigger
- The price filter
Show the answer
The tool's own pricing page. Jamie's page showed a free plan with a 30-minute limit, which neither label told us.
3. What does a Featured label tell you?
- Where the listing is placed, not whether it fits your job
- That the tool was tested
- That it is the cheapest
Show the answer
Where the listing is placed, not whether it fits your job. The Featured card at the top of our meeting notes search on FutureTools was for building AI agents.
