Should I learn Tableau or Power BI first?

Quick answer

Learn the one your company, or the company you want to work for, already uses. If there is none, pick by computer: Power BI Desktop is free but runs only on Windows, while Tableau’s free desktop editions run on Windows and Mac. The core skills, such as dimensions, measures, filters and dashboards, carry over between them.

Why the choice matters less than it looks

Both tools are built on the same ideas. You connect a data source, split fields into dimensions and measures, pick an aggregation and arrange charts into a dashboard with filters. Someone who understands those ideas in one tool usually finds the other’s buttons in a week or two.

What takes longer to learn is the judgment: which question the dashboard answers, how each number is defined and whether the data can be trusted. That is the same in every tool, and it is what this course spends most of its time on.

A simple rule

Check five job posts for the role you want. If most mention one tool, learn that one. If they are split, learn whichever runs on your computer today, and add the second later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Power BI on a Mac?
Not natively. Microsoft offers Power BI Desktop for Windows only. Mac users run it in a Windows virtual machine or use the browser version, which has fewer building features.
Is Looker Studio worth learning?
It is free from Google, runs in the browser and is popular for marketing reports. It is a good third tool, especially if your data already lives in Google Sheets or Google Analytics.
