Is Tableau free?
Quick answer
Yes, for learning and personal projects. Tableau has three free options: Tableau Public on the web, Tableau Desktop Public Edition and Tableau Desktop Free Edition. The catch is sharing. Anything you publish to Tableau Public is visible to everyone, and sharing work privately with colleagues needs a paid Tableau license.

The three free options
| Option | What it is good for | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Tableau Public (web) | Building and publishing charts in the browser with a free account | Everything you publish is public |
| Tableau Desktop Public Edition | The desktop app for practice, saving locally and publishing to Tableau Public | Not licensed for commercial use |
| Tableau Desktop Free Edition | Full desktop analysis, with your work kept on your own computer | Cannot publish or share online, or save to Tableau Public |
For this course, Tableau Desktop Public Edition is the best fit: it is free, it runs on Windows and Mac, and the first-chart lesson walks through it step by step.
When you need to pay
The free versions cover learning, portfolios and public data. You need a paid license when a team has to share dashboards privately, for example a sales dashboard built on customer data that only staff should see, or when a dashboard must refresh from a company database on a schedule.
Tableau Public also has limits worth knowing: up to 15 million rows per workbook, and only Google Sheets data sources refresh automatically. CSV and Excel files need re-publishing to update.
What to do first
Install Tableau Desktop Public Edition, use sample data, and learn the core ideas, such as dimensions and measures. They carry straight over to paid Tableau, and most of them to Power BI and Looker Studio too.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I use Tableau Public for work?
- Not with private company data: everything published there is public, and the Public Edition is not licensed for commercial use. Use it to learn, then use your employer’s licensed Tableau for real work.
- Is there a free trial of paid Tableau?
- Tableau offers trials of its paid products from its website. Start the trial when you have real work to try it on, so the trial days are not wasted.
