How do you assign a comment as a task in Google Docs?
Quick answer
An assigned comment is a comment in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides that is given to a specific person as an action item. You mention their email with @ or + and tick "Assign to"; they get an email, the item shows in their follow-ups and it stays open until someone marks it Done.

Why it matters
Review notes scattered across email and chat get lost. An assigned comment sits right on the sentence or cell it is about, names who owns it and stays visible until it is resolved, so nothing slips.
It also gives a quick status check. The follow-up count on a file shows how many open action items are left before it can go out.
A worked example
A nonprofit is finishing a grant application in Google Docs due Friday. The director highlights the budget paragraph and comments "+jamal@ please confirm the program staff costs", ticking Assign to Jamal. She assigns two more items to the program lead.
Jamal gets an email linking straight to the paragraph, updates the numbers and clicks Done. On Thursday the director sees zero open action items in the file and submits, without chasing anyone by email.
Often confused with
Assigned comment vs a regular comment
A regular comment notifies people you mention, but has no owner. An assigned comment has one owner and stays open until it is marked Done.
Assigned comment vs suggesting mode
Suggesting mode proposes edits to the text. A comment, assigned or not, is a note about the text.
Assigned comment vs a project tool
Project tools track tasks across many files. Assigned comments track tasks tied to one spot in one file, which is enough for most document reviews.
Tips
- Assign one clear action per comment, with a deadline in the text.
- Reply rather than starting a new comment, to keep the thread together.
- Check the follow-up count before you call a document finished.
