What is version history in Google Docs and Sheets?
Quick answer
Version history is the record Google keeps of every saved state of a Doc, Sheet or Slides file. Editors can open it to see who changed what and when, name important versions and restore an earlier one. In Sheets you can also see the edit history of a single cell.

Why it matters
When several people edit one live file, mistakes happen: a row deleted, a formula overwritten, a paragraph pasted over. Version history means none of that is permanent. You can find exactly when it happened, who did it and roll back.
It also replaces the habit of saving copies called "v2" and "final final". There is one file, and its history holds every earlier state.
A worked example
A property manager notices the rent roll Sheet shows $41,200 for October instead of $46,800. She opens File > Version history > See version history and sees that at 3:12pm yesterday an assistant sorted only one column, scrambling rents against units.
She restores the 3:05pm version. Because restoring a spreadsheet clears the cell-by-cell edit history from before the restore, she first makes a copy of the current file for the record. Ten minutes later the totals are right again.
Often confused with
Version history vs undo
Undo only reaches back through your own recent changes in this session. Version history covers everyone’s changes over the file’s life.
Version history vs Drive file versions
Docs, Sheets and Slides have version history. Uploaded files such as PDFs and images have a separate "Manage versions" feature in Drive.
Version history vs a backup
Version history lives inside the file. If the file itself is deleted and emptied from trash, its history goes too.
Tips
- Name a version before big changes (File > Version history > Name current version).
- Copy the file before restoring if you need to keep the current cell history.
- Turn on "Show changes" to see edits highlighted by person.

Frequently asked questions
- Who can see version history?
- People with edit access. Viewers and commenters cannot open it.
- How far back does version history go?
- Back to the file’s creation, though Google may merge older revisions to save space, so very old intermediate states can be hard to find.
- Does version history track formatting changes in Sheets?
- Full versions include them, but the single-cell edit history does not show some changes, such as format changes, inserted rows or values changed by formulas.
