What is Smart Fill in Google Sheets?
Quick answer
Smart Fill is a Google Sheets feature that notices a pattern in the values you are typing based on a neighboring column, such as first names pulled from full names or domains from email addresses, and offers to fill in the rest of the column for you with a formula.

Why it matters
Splitting, combining and reformatting columns is a classic time sink: an hour retyping first names for a mail merge. Smart Fill turns that into typing two or three examples and pressing a key.
Because it writes a formula rather than pasting values, the result is easy to check, and you can see exactly how each value was produced.
A worked example
A dentist’s office exports 640 patients with a Name column like "Rivera, Ana". They need a First name column for a reminder email. The receptionist types "Ana" next to the first row and "Marcus" next to the second. Sheets suggests filling the remaining 638 rows; she accepts with Ctrl+Enter.
Spot-checking a dozen rows, she finds two patients with no comma in their name came out blank. She fixes those by hand. The whole job takes five minutes instead of an afternoon.
Often confused with
Smart Fill vs autofill
Autofill (dragging the fill handle) continues simple series such as 1, 2, 3 or Mon, Tue. Smart Fill works out a transformation from another column.
Smart Fill vs Gemini
Smart Fill is a built-in pattern feature and needs no AI plan. Gemini is Google’s AI assistant, which can do more open-ended jobs on eligible plans.
Smart Fill vs Excel’s Flash Fill
They do the same job. Excel’s version is called Flash Fill.
