ChatGPT Skills: Build a Brand Voice Skill
OpenAI is retiring Custom GPTs and moving to ChatGPT Skills. This upcoming Stepthrough module will show you how to build a reusable brand voice skill, so everything ChatGPT writes for you sounds like your business. It is coming soon to the Prompt Writing section.
What you will build (coming soon)
In this module you will build a Brand Voice Skill in ChatGPT. It will hold the rules for how your business sounds: your tone, the words you use and avoid, how long things should be, and a few examples of writing you are proud of. Once it is set up, you can bring it into your work so posts, emails and replies come out on brand.
If you did the Custom GPT Social Media Assistant module, the ingredients will look familiar. The difference is where they live: in a skill you can reuse, rather than a separate GPT you have to go and open.
You will finish with a before-and-after test, the same way the Custom GPT module does: one request without the skill, the same request with it, and a clear look at what changed.
Who this is for
This module is planned for anyone who writes for a business with ChatGPT and wants the results to sound consistent: owners, marketers, agencies and office staff. It is especially useful if you built Custom GPTs and want to move your work over to Skills.
No technical background is needed. If you can describe how your business talks to customers, you can build this skill. It follows Prompt Writing 101 in the Prompt Writing section, and it helps to have done that lesson first, since a good skill is really a well-structured prompt you do not have to retype.
Agencies and freelancers who write for several clients will get extra value from it. One skill per client keeps each brand's voice separate, so a post for a law firm does not end up sounding like a post for a bakery.
What the module will cover
The exact steps are still being built, but the plan is:
- A quick look at what ChatGPT Skills are and how they differ from the Custom GPTs they replace.
- Writing down your brand voice: tone, banned words, sentence length, formatting and calls to action.
- Adding example posts or emails so the skill has something concrete to match.
- Creating the skill in ChatGPT and saving it.
- Testing it with the same request with and without the skill, to see the difference.
- Tips for keeping the skill up to date as your brand grows.
Why a brand voice skill is worth building
Without guidance, ChatGPT writes in its own default style: upbeat, general and full of the same stock phrases. Rewriting that every time takes longer than it should. A brand voice skill writes your preferences down once, so you do not have to repeat them in every chat.
It also makes a team more consistent. When everyone uses the same skill, a post written by one person and an email written by another sound like they came from the same company. The same principles from Prompt Writing 101 apply here: clear roles, real context and specific format rules beat vague adjectives like "professional" or "friendly."
How you will use it in your business
Use the skill whenever you ask ChatGPT to write something customers will see: social posts, newsletters, website copy, proposals or replies to reviews. Start with a short version, test it on a few real requests, and tighten the rules wherever the output still misses. Share it with everyone who writes for the business, so new staff sound on brand from their first week. Many teams find that a handful of specific rules, like "never use emoji" or "lead with a real number," change the output more than pages of description.
If you already have a Custom GPT, you are not starting over. The instructions and example documents you wrote for it are the raw material for the skill. The module will show you how to carry them across so nothing you built is wasted.
What you will need
- A ChatGPT account with access to Skills.
- Your brand guidelines, or a page of notes on how you want to sound.
- Two or three pieces of writing that already sound right, such as a post, an email or a page from your website.
- A list of words and habits you never want to see, such as emoji, hype words or long paragraphs.
How Stepthrough modules work
Like every Stepthrough module, it will be interactive. You watch each step on the left, then do it yourself on the right in a practice copy of ChatGPT, with every click checked and a Do it for me button if you get stuck. No real account is touched while you practice.
Frequently asked questions
- What are ChatGPT Skills?
- Skills are ChatGPT's newer way to package reusable instructions and reference material. OpenAI is using them to replace Custom GPTs.
- When will the Brand Voice Skill module be available?
- It is planned and coming soon. In the meantime, the Custom GPT Social Media Assistant and Prompt Writing 101 modules teach the same core ideas.
- Is this course really free?
- Yes. Stepthrough is completely free, and the practice copy needs no accounts. To build it for real you need your own ChatGPT accounts, and some of those cost money once you use them for real work.
- What happens to my existing Custom GPTs?
- OpenAI is retiring Custom GPTs. The instructions and example documents you wrote for them are exactly what a brand voice skill needs, so they are worth keeping.
- What should a brand voice skill include?
- Your tone, words to use and avoid, length and formatting rules, how to end with a call to action, and two or three real examples of your writing.
