# Gemini Agent: Google’s "Universal Agent for Work" Takes Objectives, Not Instructions

Google is building one Gemini agent that takes a goal like "turn this request into a project update deck" and does the steps; for most teams it is not available yet.

## What happened

On October 8, 2026, at Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent, which it calls a universal agent for work: one prompt box for questions, knowledge work, content creation and coding. Google says the agent plans the work, uses skills and tools, connects to a company’s business systems and brings back something finished, inside the documents and inboxes people already use. 9to5Google reports you can call it with @Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Chat, and that it picks the model for each job, today from the Gemini and Claude model families. Google’s examples, as reported by 9to5Google, include turning a manager’s request for a project update into a slide deck and scheduling a meeting by finding attendees in a Chat space and checking their calendars. It is in private preview, with wider availability coming for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans; TechCrunch reports Google is starting with businesses before consumers. ## Who gets it, and what it costs

- **Now:** private preview for Google Cloud enterprise customers.
- **Next:** wider availability for Workspace customers on select Business and Enterprise plans. Google has not given a date.
- **Consumers:** later; Google is starting with businesses.

Google has not published pricing for the Gemini agent.

## What it means for an office team

The job it is aimed at is the one that eats a Tuesday afternoon: a manager asks for a project update, and someone has to find the latest numbers in Sheets, the decisions in email and turn it all into slides. Google’s pitch is that you hand over the goal and review the deck.

Until it reaches your plan, you can practice the same habit with what you have today: give Gemini a clear goal, the sources to use, and check the result against those sources before it goes to your manager.

## How to try it

1. Read Google’s announcement to see what the agent is meant to do, and note that it is in private preview.
2. If your company is on a Workspace Business or Enterprise plan, ask your Google admin whether your organization is in the preview or on the list for wider availability.
3. Meanwhile, practice handing Gemini a goal with its sources in Gmail, where Gemini can already summarize a thread and draft the reply.
