A vendor contract arrives the day before it needs a signature, and nobody has time to read all of it. So it gets skimmed, and the auto-renewal, the [late fee](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/late-fee) or the [cap on liability](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/limitation-of-liability-clause) gets missed until it costs money. Automating contract review with AI gives every contract a careful first read: a plain-English summary, the risky clauses quoted word for word, and the dates you need to diary. A person, or your lawyer, still decides. Start with [Check a contract for red flags with Claude](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/check-a-contract-for-red-flags-with-claude), a free lesson where you upload a vendor contract and get the risky clauses with the exact wording quoted.

## What can AI do in contract review, and what can't it?

AI is a fast, tireless first reader. It can restate a clause in plain words, list every date and fee, point to the section that says it, and [compare two versions](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/document-comparison) line by line. That covers most of what slows people down.

It cannot tell you whether to sign. It does not know your business's tolerance for risk, your history with the vendor or the law where you operate, and it can misread or miss a clause. The glossary entry on [legal information vs legal advice](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/legal-information-vs-legal-advice) draws that line clearly. Treat everything below as flags for a person to check, never as approval.

## Which contract review tasks should you hand to AI?

Pick by the question you are asking. "What is risky in here?", "What changed?" and "When does this renew?" each have a best tool.

### 1. How do you find the red flags in a contract?

Upload the contract to Claude and ask for it in plain English, then for the risky clauses with the exact words quoted, then for questions to send the vendor. Quoting matters: you can find each flagged line in the PDF and check it yourself. In the lesson you save the review as a Claude Project so the next contract gets the same checklist. Typical flags include an [auto-renewal clause](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/auto-renewal-clause), an [indemnification clause](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/indemnification-clause) and a [limitation of liability clause](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/limitation-of-liability-clause).

- **Tool fit:** Claude, because the review is a conversation a person runs and checks. A Claude Project keeps your checklist between contracts.
- **Learn it:** [Check a contract for red flags with Claude](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/check-a-contract-for-red-flags-with-claude).

### 2. Can AI summarize a contract and list every date that matters?

Yes. In the Foxit lesson you upload a client contract to Foxit Workspace, get a plain-English summary and every renewal and exit date, check them against the PDF, and hand your manager a one-page summary. KDAN does a similar job from inside the PDF: you open a vendor agreement, ask the AI Chatbot for the fees and the renewal and exit deadlines with section numbers, check the renewal clause yourself, and save the answers.

- **Tool fit:** Foxit or KDAN if your team already works in one of those PDF editors, since the AI sits next to the document. Claude or ChatGPT work too if you prefer a chat.
- **Learn it:** [Review a Client Contract in 10 Minutes using Foxit AI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/review-a-client-contract-in-10-minutes-with-foxit-ai), or [KDAN: Get a Vendor Contract's Key Terms with AI Chatbot](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/kdan-ai-chatbot-vendor-contract-key-terms). See [contract key terms](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/contract-key-terms).

### 3. How do you catch every change in a revised contract?

"Version 2, just small cleanups" is the most dangerous line in contract email. In the Foxit lesson you compare both PDFs, see every changed fee, date and clause, and reply with a list. In the Claude lesson you paste last year's and this year's version of a document, which in the lesson is a staff policy, get a side-by-side table of what changed, and catch what Claude gets wrong. The same method works for contracts.

- **Tool fit:** Foxit to compare the two PDFs directly and list every changed fee, date and clause. Claude for a readable table of what the changes mean. Using both is a strong check.
- **Learn it:** [Foxit PDF Editor: Catch Every Change in a Revised Contract](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/compare-two-versions-of-a-contract-with-foxit-pdf-editor), and [Claude: compare two versions of a document and see what changed](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/claude-compare-two-versions-of-a-document). The [document comparison](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/document-comparison) entry explains the difference between the two approaches.

### 4. How do you get through a long vendor proposal before a meeting?

A 25-page proposal often hides the terms that matter in the middle. In the Smallpdf lesson you get an AI summary, ask about renewal, exit fees and extra costs, check each answer on its page, and save it all as notes for the meeting. This is not a full contract review, but it tells you which pages to read closely.

- **Tool fit:** Smallpdf, an [AI PDF summarizer](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/ai-pdf-summarizer).
- **Learn it:** [Smallpdf: Get the Key Points of a 25-Page PDF in 5 Minutes](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/smallpdf-ai-pdf-summarizer-key-points-long-pdf).

## Which tool fits each contract review task?

| Task | Best fit | Free lesson |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Red flags with quoted clauses | Claude (saved as a Project) | [Claude contract red flags](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/check-a-contract-for-red-flags-with-claude) |
| Summary and key dates | Foxit Workspace or KDAN | [Foxit contract review](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/review-a-client-contract-in-10-minutes-with-foxit-ai) |
| What changed between versions | Foxit compare, plus Claude for meaning | [Foxit compare versions](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/compare-two-versions-of-a-contract-with-foxit-pdf-editor) |
| Key terms with section numbers | KDAN AI Chatbot | [KDAN key terms](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/kdan-ai-chatbot-vendor-contract-key-terms) |
| Long proposal before a meeting | Smallpdf | [Smallpdf summary](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/smallpdf-ai-pdf-summarizer-key-points-long-pdf) |

There is no n8n, Make or Zapier workflow on this page, and that is on purpose. Contract review is started by a person and read by a person, so chat and PDF tools fit better than a trigger. If you later want every incoming contract saved to a folder with its key dates logged in a sheet, that part can be automated; the review itself should not be.

## Who makes the final call on a contract?

A person, every time. For anything with real money or liability at stake, that person should be your lawyer or whoever holds signing authority. AI's job is to make their read faster by pointing at the right clauses. Every lesson here includes a step where you check the AI's answer against the PDF, and you should keep that habit. If a quote is not in the document, the AI made it up.

Contracts are confidential. Use a work account with model training turned off, check that your firm allows the tool you are using, and remove anything you do not need to share before you upload. For law firms, [attorney-client privilege](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/attorney-client-privilege) adds another reason to be strict. [ChatGPT: Keep Client Data Safe, Set Up Your Team's Data Controls in 10 Minutes](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-data-controls-protect-client-data) covers the settings.

## Key takeaways

- Use AI as the first reader: plain-English summary, quoted red flags, dates and fees.
- Always check a flagged clause against the PDF; if the quote is not there, the AI got it wrong.
- Compare versions in a PDF compare tool, then use AI to explain the changes.
- AI flags; a person, or a lawyer, decides whether to sign.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can AI replace a lawyer for contract review?**

No. AI can find and explain clauses quickly, but it does not give legal advice and can miss things. Use it to prepare a better conversation with your lawyer, not to skip one.

**Is it safe to upload contracts to AI tools?**

It can be, with the right settings. Use a work account, turn off model training, and follow your firm's policy on which tools are approved for confidential documents.

**Which tool should I start with?**

Claude, for the red-flag review, because it teaches the quote-and-check habit. The [AI for Law Firms](https://learn.ynteractive.com/courses/ai-for-law-firms) course then adds the Foxit and comparison lessons.
