Paralegals should start with [Reply to a Client Asking for a Case Update](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-client-case-update-email-law-firm), a free 10-minute ChatGPT lesson. You give ChatGPT the client's thread and the firm's facts, let it draft the update, have it check every claim against those facts, catch the lines that predict an outcome, and send a clear, kind reply from Gmail. Client updates are a daily paralegal job, and the check is what keeps AI safe to use on them.

The path is four free lessons and about 39 minutes. Three use ChatGPT only; the last uses n8n. For the whole firm's view, see the [AI playbook for law firms](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/industry/law-firms).

## Which lesson should a paralegal take first?

Take the case update lesson first. The example is Harbor Street Law, a made-up small firm, and a client who wants to know whether the other side responded, when the court date is and whether they will win. Two of those questions have factual answers. The third is one only the attorney can address, and the lesson shows how to make sure the draft never answers it.

The habit you learn carries over to everything else: draft from facts, list each claim against its source, and remove anything that sounds like legal advice before the attorney reviews it.

## Why learn prompt structure second?

Because paralegal work is full of repeat requests: intake summaries, document checklists, hearing reminders. [Prompt Writing 101](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/prompt-writing-101-role-context-task-format) shows the four parts of a reliable request, **Role**, **Context**, **Task** and **Format**, and has you save one as a template. It takes 8 minutes. A saved template means the same request gets the same shape of answer every time, which makes review faster.

## How does the meeting summary lesson help a paralegal?

Use it for internal case meetings and client calls your firm records with consent. [Summarize a Meeting Transcript](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-summarize-meeting-transcript) turns a transcript into a summary, decisions, an [action items](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/action-items) table with owners and due dates, open questions and a [follow-up email](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/follow-up-email). It takes 9 minutes. The example is a bakery's team meeting, but the request is the same for a case strategy meeting.

## What does the n8n lesson add?

[AI Email Responder](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ai-email-responder-gmail-drafts-n8n) builds an n8n agent that reads new Gmail messages and saves a reply draft in the same thread. Nothing is sent automatically. It takes 12 minutes. For a firm, keep it to logistics: office hours, document drop-off, how to reach the right person. Never let it answer questions about a client's matter.

## Which prompts can you copy today?

Three [prompts](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/prompt) to paste into a firm-approved AI tool. Fill in the brackets.

```text
You are a paralegal at [FIRM]. Here are the facts of the client's matter, numbered: [FACTS]. Draft a short, kind status update to [CLIENT] answering: [QUESTIONS]. Use only the numbered facts. Do not predict an outcome or give legal advice. After the draft, list each claim and the fact number behind it.
```

```text
You are a litigation paralegal. Summarize this intake call transcript for the attorney: [PASTE]. Give the parties, key dates, what the client wants, documents mentioned and open questions. Write "Not stated" for anything missing. Do not assess the case.
```

```text
Turn these notes into a document checklist for a new [MATTER TYPE] client: [NOTES]. Group items by who provides them, with a plain-English line on why each is needed. Mark anything the attorney must confirm with "ATTORNEY TO CONFIRM".
```

## How long will this take, and what do you need?

About 39 minutes in total, or one lesson a day for most of a week. The practice versions are free. To work for real:

- **Lessons 1 to 3** need an AI chat tool your firm has approved for client information, with a business plan and data controls.
- **Lesson 4** needs n8n (n8n Cloud has paid plans, or self-host) and an OpenAI API key, billed separately from ChatGPT plans.

Check each vendor's pricing page for current plans.

## Try it free, step by step

**Reply Faster to a Client Asking for a Case Update: ChatGPT for Small Law Firms**. A client wants a court date and a promise she'll win. Give ChatGPT the thread and your firm's facts, catch the lines that predict an outcome, and send a clear, kind case update from Gmail. You do every step yourself in a practice copy of ChatGPT, it checks your work as you go, and “Do it for me” finishes any step you get stuck on. Free, and nothing touches your real accounts.

## What should a paralegal never hand to AI?

Never hand AI anything that needs a lawyer's judgment, and never paste privileged material into a tool the firm hasn't approved.

- **No legal advice.** AI can draft an update; it can't tell a client what their case is worth or how it will go.
- **Check every cite and date.** AI can invent a case, a rule or a deadline that looks real. Verify against the file.
- **Attorney review first.** Anything going to a client, court or opposing counsel gets reviewed by the responsible attorney. This guide is not legal advice; follow your firm's policies and your jurisdiction's ethics rules.

## Key takeaways

- Paralegals should start with the client case update lesson, which drafts from firm facts and removes outcome predictions.
- The four-lesson path takes about 39 minutes; three lessons need only ChatGPT.
- Saved prompt templates make intake summaries and checklists consistent and faster to review.
- An n8n inbox agent can draft logistics replies, but never anything about a client's matter.
- Use only firm-approved tools for client data, and keep attorney review on everything that leaves the firm.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can paralegals use ChatGPT for legal research?**

Carefully, if at all. AI can invent citations. Use it to outline or organize, then verify every authority in a proper legal research service before anyone relies on it.

**Is it safe to paste client documents into AI?**

Only into a tool your firm has approved for client information, on a plan with the right data controls. Remove details the task doesn't need.

**Will AI replace paralegals?**

These lessons treat AI as a drafting assistant. The checking, the judgment about what to send and the relationship with the client stay with you and the attorney.
