Ask ChatGPT to search the web and put a source after every fact, tell it to label anything it cannot source as "not verified", and then open the citations that matter and check that the page says the same thing. The free lesson [Catch Made-up Facts Before They Reach Customers](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/how-to-fix-bad-chatgpt-answers-push-back-constraints-fact-check) shows the whole routine on a real draft, including the step most people skip: actually opening the link.

Without a web search or a document to work from, ChatGPT answers from what it learned in training, and it cannot point to where a fact came from. Once it searches, the answer comes with small citation links after each point. Those links are what you check.

## What are the steps?

1. **Ask what it assumed.** If you already have a draft, ask ChatGPT to list every fact it assumed and every fact you should check. This finds the made-up parts fast.
2. **Ask it to search and cite.** For example: "Search the web and check these facts. Put a source link after each one. Use official or primary sources where possible. If you cannot find a source, say not verified." If your version shows a web search option in the **+** menu, turn it on.
3. **Look for one citation per claim.** A list of links at the bottom is weaker than a link after each sentence. Ask again if it bundles them.
4. **Open the citations for anything that matters.** Read the line on the page. Check the date too: an old page can be accurate and out of date.
5. **Check who wrote it.** A vendor's own page, a government site or the original study is better than a blog post that repeats a number.
6. **Put only checked facts in the final version.** Tell ChatGPT the checked fact and ask it to write using only the facts you give it.

## What does this look like in a real lesson?

In [Catch Made-up Facts Before They Reach Customers](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/how-to-fix-bad-chatgpt-answers-push-back-constraints-fact-check), a made-up bakery owner asks ChatGPT for a customer email about cake pickup, late pickups and freshness, but leaves out the facts. The draft invents a late pickup policy and says to enjoy the cake "within 2 to 3 days".

You point at the exact problem, add constraints, then ask what it assumed. ChatGPT admits the freshness line and a refrigeration line were its own guesses. You give it the one fact it did not know (most cakes have cream cheese frosting) and ask it to check against sources. The new answer has citations, and you click the FoodSafety.gov one. The page says never to leave perishable food out of refrigeration for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. It matches, so that fact goes in the email. Every other fact came from the owner.

## What if the facts are in my own documents?

Then you want a tool that answers only from your files and cites the passage.

- **Gemini Notebook** (formerly [NotebookLM](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/notebooklm)) answers from the sources you add and marks each fact with a numbered citation. In [the Gemini Notebook lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/notebooklm-gemini-notebook-cited-answers-briefing-doc) you add a cleaning contract PDF, a crew handbook from Drive and a services web page, ask what the contract requires, click citation 1 and see the passage highlighted in the contract.
- **ChatGPT or Claude with an uploaded file** can do the same if you ask for the section or page number on every line.

## Which tools are built around citations?

- **Perplexity** searches the web and cites sources in every answer, which suits quick fact-checks.
- **Claude Research** runs many searches and writes a report with a citation on each claim. In [Research: a cited competitor price scan](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/claude-research-tutorial), you open one competitor's source and find the prices are from March 2024, something the report did not say.
- **ChatGPT deep research** writes longer cited reports for bigger questions.

The glossary entry on [AI citations](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/ai-citations) explains what a citation does and does not prove.

## What mistakes should I avoid?

- **Treating a link as proof.** A citation only helps if you open it and it says the same thing.
- **Ignoring dates.** Prices, rules and statistics change. Check when the page was written.
- **Accepting second-hand sources.** Go to the original when a number matters.
- **Asking for sources after the email is sent.** Check before anything reaches a customer.
- **Letting it cite for things you told it.** Your own facts need no source. Keep them separate from the web facts.

## Key takeaways

- Ask ChatGPT to search and put a source after every fact.
- Have it mark anything it cannot source as not verified.
- Open the citations that matter and read the actual line.
- Use [Gemini](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/gemini) Notebook or an uploaded file when the facts are in your own documents.
- Only checked facts go into anything you send.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does ChatGPT sometimes give sources that do not exist?**

Without a web search it can produce links that look real but are not. When it searches, the citations come from pages it opened, but you still need to check that the page says what the answer claims.

**Does ChatGPT always search the web?**

No. It decides for many questions, or you can ask it to search. If an answer has no citation links, it did not search for that answer.

**Which is better for cited answers, ChatGPT or Perplexity?**

Both cite sources when they search. [Perplexity](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/perplexity) is built around search for quick lookups, and ChatGPT is handy when the cited fact goes straight into a draft you are already writing there.
