# How do I connect ChatGPT to Google Sheets?

There are two ways to connect ChatGPT to Google Sheets: install an add-on such as GPT for Work, which puts AI functions inside the sheet, or build a small [n8n workflow](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/workflow) that gives an [OpenAI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/openai) model your Google sign-in so it can read and write rows. Which one fits depends on the job. If you want AI to fill or tidy cells while you work, use an add-on. If you want a chat that answers from the sheet, or rows that update on their own when something happens, use n8n. Uploading a one-off export to ChatGPT also works, but nothing stays connected.

Google's own **Gemini in Sheets** is the closest thing to a built-in option if your company uses Google Workspace with Gemini. It is Google's model rather than ChatGPT.

## How do I set up the add-on route?

1. In Google Sheets, open **Extensions**, then **Add-ons**, then **Get add-ons**.
2. Search for the add-on (GPT for Work lists itself as "GPT for Sheets and Docs"), click **Install** and allow the permissions with your Google account.
3. Open it from the **Extensions** menu. Each add-on has its own panel and functions, so follow its help page for the exact names.
4. Try it on a copy of the sheet first, on a few rows, and check the results before you fill a whole column.

## How do I set up the n8n route?

1. **Get a workflow.** Copy n8n's chat-with-sheets template into a new n8n workflow, or build an AI Agent with a Google Sheets tool.
2. **Give it a model.** In the **OpenAI Chat Model** node, pick n8n's free **Gateway credits** if your account has them, or your own OpenAI API key. The API is billed separately from a ChatGPT subscription.
3. **Connect Google.** In the Google Sheets node, create a credential and click **Sign in with Google**.
4. **Pick the document and the tab** from the lists, then click **Execute step** to check that your rows appear.
5. **Open chat** at the bottom of the canvas and ask a question.

The lesson ends with a check: click **Analyze Data** in the Logs panel to see what the agent read, then filter the sheet yourself, because models can slip on sums. The agent only reads, so it never changes your sheet.

- **Pasting an API key into a chat.** Keys go in the tool's credential box only, and you treat them like passwords.
- **Signing in with the wrong Google account.** The credential only lists sheets that account can open.
