Use this for a product page, an online store listing or a catalog entry. Generic descriptions lean on "premium," "perfect for any occasion" and features the product doesn't have. This prompt gives the AI a spec list it may not go beyond, tells it who buys the product and why, and asks for a short opening, scannable details and nothing you'd have to take back after a customer complains.

## The prompt

Copy it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Copilot) and replace every `[BLANK]` with your own details. It uses the four parts from [Prompt Writing 101](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/prompt-writing-101-role-context-task-format): Role, Context, Task and Format.

Copy prompt

```text
Role: You are the product copywriter for [BUSINESS], writing for our own store.
Context: The product is [PRODUCT]. The buyer is usually [BUYER]. Product facts, the only details you may use: [SPECS]. Words we never use: [BANNED WORDS]. Don't add certifications, awards, ingredients, sizes or claims that aren't in the facts.
Task: Write a product description that helps the buyer decide whether this is right for them.
Format: A two-sentence opening, then 4 to 6 short bullet points of details taken from the facts, then one line on who it's best for. Under 120 words. Plain words, no emoji.
```

## Fill in the blanks

**`[BUSINESS]`**

Your business name and what you sell.

**`[PRODUCT]`**

The product's name as it appears in your store.

**`[BUYER]`**

Who usually buys it and why: for themselves, as a gift, for a business.

**`[SPECS]`**

Every fact a buyer might need: contents, sizes, options, materials, price, shipping. These are the only details allowed.

**`[BANNED WORDS]`**

Words that don't fit your brand or that you can't back up, such as "best" or "world-class."

## Example, filled in

**A made-up example** from the free lesson [Build an n8n AI Agent That Plans Your Content Calendar](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/n8n-ai-agent-content-calendar). Harbor & Pine Coffee Roasters, the made-up coffee brand in the content calendar agent lesson, sells gift boxes. It needs a product page description for its holiday box.

Copy example

```text
Role: You are the product copywriter for Harbor & Pine Coffee Roasters, a small online coffee brand, writing for our own store.
Context: The product is the Holiday Gift Box. The buyer is usually someone shopping for a coffee drinker on their list. Product facts, the only details you may use: three 12 oz bags (Holiday Ember Blend, a light roast from Ethiopia and a decaf from Colombia); whole bean or ground, chosen at checkout; every bag roasted the week it ships; packed in a kraft box with a handwritten note card; $48; ships across the US. Words we never use: best, ultimate, amazing, life-changing, world-class. Don't add certifications, awards, ingredients, sizes or claims that aren't in the facts.
Task: Write a product description that helps the buyer decide whether this is right for them.
Format: A two-sentence opening, then 4 to 6 short bullet points of details taken from the facts, then one line on who it's best for. Under 120 words. Plain words, no emoji.
```

## What a good answer looks like

- An opening that names the buyer's situation (a gift for a coffee drinker) and what's in the box.
- Bullets that each map to one fact: the three coffees, grind choice, roast date, note card, price.
- None of your banned words, and no "premium" or "artisan" you didn't supply.
- No added labels like organic, Fair Trade or "award-winning."

## How to check it before you use it

An AI draft can sound right and still say something you never told it. Use the habit from the [Reply Faster lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-reply-to-customer-emails): check every promise, name, date and number against what you gave it before anything goes out.

- Check every claim: put the bullets next to your facts and cross off each match. Anything left over gets deleted.
- Watch for quiet upgrades such as "hand-roasted," "rare" or "ethically sourced." They sound harmless, but they're claims a customer can hold you to.
- Check sizes, counts and prices character by character. One wrong number on a product page means refunds.

## Why this prompt works

Product copy is where invented details cause real trouble, because people buy based on them. Listing the facts and saying "the only details you may use" is [grounding](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/grounding). If you write many descriptions, save the brand rules and banned words in a [Custom GPT](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/custom-gpt), the setup the [Ad Copy Writer lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/custom-gpt-ad-copy-writer) builds, and paste only the specs each time.

## Practice it in the free lesson

**[Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task, Format](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/prompt-writing-101-role-context-task-format)**: Ask ChatGPT for the same customer email twice, once vaguely and once with a four-part prompt, and see exactly why structure gets a better answer. You do every step yourself in a practice copy of ChatGPT, and nothing touches your real accounts.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I do many products at once?**

Yes, a few at a time. Paste each product's facts as its own numbered block and ask for one description per block. Small batches are easier to check line by line.
