Use this when a prospect says "how are you different from them?" and you want a one-pager your team can hand out. The danger with AI here is invention: a model will cheerfully "remember" a competitor's pricing or features that are out of date or wrong. So this prompt works the other way. You paste the facts you have verified, with where each came from, and it may use nothing else. Blank cells say "not verified" instead of a guess.

Comparative claims can create legal risk. Have someone who knows your advertising rules review the page before it goes out.

**Have a professional review it.** This prompt helps you draft, not decide. AI can get the law wrong and doesn’t know your jurisdiction or your facts, so have a licensed attorney review anything legal before you send or sign it.

## The prompt

Copy it into ChatGPT (or Claude, Gemini or Copilot) and replace every `[BLANK]` with your own details. It uses the four parts from [Prompt Writing 101](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/prompt-writing-101-role-context-task-format): Role, Context, Task and Format.

Copy prompt

```text
Role: You are a product marketer writing a fair, factual comparison for sales conversations.
Context: We are [OUR COMPANY]. The competitor is [COMPETITOR]. The buyer we are writing for: [BUYER]. Below are the only facts you may use, each with its source. Facts about us: [OUR FACTS]. Facts about the competitor: [THEIR FACTS].
Task: Write a one-page comparison. Use only the facts supplied. Never add features, prices, customers or numbers from memory. Where we have no verified fact for one side, write "not verified". Choose the five comparison points that matter most to this buyer, lead with where the competitor is genuinely stronger, then where we are, and finish with "Who each one suits best". Keep the tone respectful.
Format: A table with the columns: point, us, competitor and source, then three short paragraphs under it. Under 300 words. No superlatives such as "best" or "leading". No emoji.
```

## Fill in the blanks

**`[OUR COMPANY]`**

Your company name.

**`[COMPETITOR]`**

The competitor's name.

**`[BUYER]`**

Who will read it and what they care about, such as a small clinic manager comparing price and setup time.

**`[OUR FACTS]`**

Facts about your product, each with a source such as "our pricing page, today".

**`[THEIR FACTS]`**

Facts you verified about the competitor from their public pages, each with the page and date you saw it.

## Example, filled in

**A made-up example** from the free lesson [Build an AI Demo Request Form That Qualifies Leads](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ai-demo-request-form-lead-qualification). Northwind Scheduling Software is the made-up software company from the sales lessons. Its rival, PlanRight Scheduler, is invented too, so every fact below is made up for the practice.

Copy example

```text
Role: You are a product marketer writing a fair, factual comparison for sales conversations.
Context: We are Northwind Scheduling Software. The competitor is PlanRight Scheduler, a made-up rival. The buyer we are writing for: a small clinic office manager comparing price and setup time. Below are the only facts you may use, each with its source. Facts about us: $39 per user per month (our price sheet, October 1); text reminders included in every plan (our price sheet, October 1); setup usually takes one afternoon (our onboarding guide). Facts about the competitor: $29 per user per month (their pricing page, seen October 1); text reminders cost extra (their pricing page, seen October 1); offers a free tier for one user (their pricing page, seen October 1).
Task: Write a one-page comparison. Use only the facts supplied. Never add features, prices, customers or numbers from memory. Where we have no verified fact for one side, write "not verified". Choose the five comparison points that matter most to this buyer, lead with where the competitor is genuinely stronger, then where we are, and finish with "Who each one suits best". Keep the tone respectful.
Format: A table with the columns: point, us, competitor and source, then three short paragraphs under it. Under 300 words. No superlatives such as "best" or "leading". No emoji.
```

## What a good answer looks like

- Rows only contain the facts you pasted, such as $39 against $29 and reminders included against extra.
- Points you couldn't verify, like their setup time, read "not verified".
- The comparison admits the competitor's lower price and free tier first.
- No superlatives and no feature that wasn't in your facts.

## How to check it before you use it

An AI draft can sound right and still say something you never told it. Use the habit from the [Reply Faster lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-reply-to-customer-emails): check every promise, name, date and number against what you gave it before anything goes out.

- Highlight every number in the output and match each to your fact list. Any number you can't match is an invention.
- Recheck the competitor's pages before sending. Prices change, and the date in the source column should be recent.
- Ask someone to read it as the competitor would. If a line feels unfair, soften or remove it.
- Have a person who knows advertising rules review the page before it is handed to prospects.

## Why this prompt works

This is a [hallucination](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/hallucination) safeguard. By supplying the only allowed facts and a "not verified" escape, you remove the model's reason to fill gaps from memory.

## Practice it in the free lesson

**[Prompt Writing 101: Role, Context, Task, Format](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/prompt-writing-101-role-context-task-format)**: Ask ChatGPT for the same customer email twice, once vaguely and once with a four-part prompt, and see exactly why structure gets a better answer. You do every step yourself in a practice copy of ChatGPT, and nothing touches your real accounts.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can ChatGPT research my competitor for me?**

It can summarize pages you paste in, but it may state outdated or wrong details from memory. Gather the facts yourself, paste them with sources, and tell it to use nothing else.
