A small business needs a steady supply of images: sale posters, Story graphics, a flyer for the counter. [ChatGPT](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/tool/chatgpt) can make them from a few sentences and your logo, but the first draft is rarely ready to post. In this free tutorial you make a real sale poster in ChatGPT Images, catch the two mistakes it makes, fix them without starting over, make a tall Story version, download it and get a caption to go with it.

## What you will do

You play the owner of Fern & Stone Garden Center, a small, made-up garden center. The fall mum sale runs Saturday and Sunday, October 4–5: any three pots for $25. You need a portrait poster for an Instagram post, a tall version for Stories, and a caption.

You work in a practice copy of ChatGPT on the web as it looks after the September 2026 ChatGPT Images 2.5 update: the Images page in the sidebar, the image editor with its Markup, Comment, Remove BG, Erase and Resize tools, and the version strip down the left side.

## How to write an image prompt that works

[OpenAI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/openai)'s own guidance for image [prompts](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/prompt) is simple: say what the image is for and who will see it, then the subject, the setting and the style, in plain, concrete words. "Warm autumn afternoon light" works better than "beautiful lighting".

Text is where business images go wrong, so treat it carefully. Put every word you want on the image in quotes, keep it short, say where it goes, and end with "No other text." Without that line, ChatGPT often adds slogans, prices or signs of its own. Attach your logo instead of describing it, so it doesn't invent a new one.

## Why you check every word

Image models are much better at text than they were, but they still swap a number, repeat a word or add a sign you never asked for. A wrong date on a sale poster costs you customers, so read the whole image before you post it, and read it again after every edit and resize.

Fix small things with small edits. A Comment pin lets you point at the exact spot, and the Describe edits box handles changes you can put in a sentence. Both work best when you say what to change and add "Keep everything else the same." Edits are not always perfectly precise, so compare the new version with the old one in the strip before you use it.

## Resize for Stories and other formats

The Resize menu offers Square 1:1, Portrait 3:4, Story 9:16, Landscape 4:3 and Widescreen 16:9. Resize makes the image again at the new shape rather than cropping it, so the layout shifts a little and the text is redrawn. That is why you check the words once more before you download.

## Which plan you need

Every ChatGPT plan can create images, including Free. Free has lower and slower limits; Go, Plus and Pro get more, and Pro is listed as unlimited within abuse [guardrails](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/guardrails). OpenAI doesn't publish exact image counts per plan, and ChatGPT tells you when you hit a limit. "Images with thinking", which plans more complex images, is on Plus, Pro and Business. Check chatgpt.com/pricing for the current details.

## Using AI images for a business, responsibly

Images made in ChatGPT carry C2PA content credentials, a label in the file's data that says it was made with AI. OpenAI's usage policies say not to use a real person's likeness without their consent, not to impersonate anyone and not to infringe other people's intellectual property. In practice: don't put customers or staff in images without asking, don't copy another brand's logo, characters or packaging, and ask for original designs instead of something "in the style of" a specific company.

## Try it yourself, free

Reading the steps is a start. Doing them is how it sticks. The interactive module walks you through every click in a practice copy of ChatGPT, checks each step, and never touches your real accounts.

## Step by step: Make Images with ChatGPT for Your Business

All 24 steps of the interactive module, in order. In the module you watch each one, then do it yourself in a practice copy that checks your work.

### 1. Open Images

1. **Open Images.** In the sidebar, click **Images**. If you don't see it there, click **Explore**, then **Images**.
   This is ChatGPT for Fern & Stone, a small garden center. The fall mum sale starts this weekend, and you need a poster for Instagram. You can ask for an image in any chat, but the Images page is made for it. In the sidebar, click Images. If it's not there, it's under Explore.

### 2. Write the brief

2. **Open the + menu.** The Images page shows ready-made styles under **Trending** and **Templates**, and a **Describe a new image** box. Click the **+** at the left of that box.
   Here's the Images page: ready-made styles in Trending and Templates, and a box to describe a new image. We'll write our own brief. First, let's give ChatGPT the shop's logo, so it doesn't invent one.
3. **Add photos & files.** Click **Add photos & files**.
4. **Pick the logo.** In the Open window, click **fern-and-stone-logo.png**.
   Your computer's file window opens on the Pictures folder.
5. **Open it.** Click **Open**.
   The logo shows up as a small thumbnail in the prompt box.
6. **Write the brief.** Click in the prompt box and paste the brief. It says what the image is for, the exact words in quotes, what to show, the style, and "No other text."
   Now the brief. A good image prompt covers what it's for, the exact words in quotes, what to show, and the style. Put every word you want on the poster in quotes, and end with no other text, so ChatGPT doesn't add slogans you never approved.
   ```text
   Create a portrait poster for an Instagram post for Fern & Stone Garden Center (logo attached, put it top left). Headline: "FALL MUM SALE". Under it, in a ribbon: "3 pots for $25". At the bottom: "SAT & SUN, OCT 4–5" and "212 MILL ROAD · 9 AM–5 PM". Show orange, yellow and deep red mums in clay pots on a wooden garden-center bench, warm autumn afternoon light, clean modern style. No other text.
   ```
7. **Create the image.** Click the round **send** button.
   An image can take a minute or more, and you can keep using ChatGPT while it works.

### 3. Check the first draft

8. **Check it, then open Edit.** Read every word on the poster. In this practice draft the date says **OCT 4–6**, and there is a chalkboard sign that says "MUMS SAEL!!" that you never asked for. (Your real image may get everything right, or get something else wrong.) Point to the image and click **Edit** at its bottom left.
   Here's the first draft, and it looks good at a glance. But read every word. The date says October fourth to sixth, not fourth to fifth. And there's a little chalkboard sign on the left with a misspelled word you never asked for. AI images still get text wrong, so always check. Yours may have different mistakes, or none. Point to the image and click Edit.

### 4. Fix it in the editor

9. **Use Comment.** The editor opens with a toolbar under the image. Click **Comment**.
   The image editor opens. Under the image is a toolbar: Markup, Comment, Remove background, Erase and Resize. Comment lets you point at the exact spot you want changed.
10. **Point at the date.** Click the date line at the bottom of the poster.
11. **Say what to change.** A numbered pin appears with an **Add a comment** box. Paste the fix.
    A numbered pin drops on that spot, with a box to describe the change. Give the exact new words, and say to keep everything else the same, so nothing else moves.
12. **Confirm the comment.** Click the blue **arrow** next to your comment.
13. **Send the comment.** In the bar under the image, which now says **1 comment**, click **Send**.
    You could add more pins, but one's enough here.
14. **Remove the stray sign.** The date now reads OCT 4–5, and a second version appears. Now paste this into the **Ask ChatGPT** box at the bottom.
    The date's fixed, and the new version sits in the strip on the left. For the chalkboard sign, you can also just describe the edit in the box at the bottom. Say exactly what to remove, and to change nothing else.
15. **Send the edit.** Click the **send** arrow.
16. **Compare with the first draft.** The sign is gone. In the strip on the left, click the **first** version to compare. (In real ChatGPT the strip shows when you click the poster itself to open it full size. If Edit opened the editor beside the chat, close it with the **X** at the top right and click the poster.)
    The sign is gone. Every edit makes a new version, and the old ones stay in the strip on the left.
17. **Back to the latest.** Now click the **newest** version at the bottom of the strip.
    Same poster, same flowers, just the two fixes. That's why you say keep everything else the same. Edits aren't always that precise, so compare like this before you use a version.

### 5. Resize and download

18. **Open Resize.** Instagram Stories are tall. Click **Resize** in the toolbar.
    This one's great for the feed. For Instagram Stories you need a tall version.
19. **Choose Story 9:16.** Click **Story 9:16**.
    Pick Story, nine by sixteen. Resize doesn't just crop. ChatGPT makes the image again at the new size, so check the words one more time.
20. **Download it.** The text still reads right. Click the **download** icon at the top right.
    The date, the price and the address all still read right.
21. **Close the editor.** Click the **X** at the top right to go back to the chat.
    Saved. Your images are also kept on the Images page, so you can find them later.

### 6. Write the caption

22. **Ask for a caption.** Click the message box at the bottom and paste the caption request.
    One last thing. The same chat can write the words for your post. Ask for a caption, and say what it must include.
    ```text
    Write a short Instagram caption for this poster: friendly, two or three sentences, mention the date, the price and that we are at 212 Mill Road. Add three local hashtags.
    ```
23. **Send it.** Click the **send** arrow.
24. **Copy the caption.** Check the date, price and address, then click the **Copy** icon under the answer.
    Check the date, the price and the address one more time, then click Copy. You've got a poster, a Story version and a caption, ready to post.

## Frequently asked questions

**Where do I make images in ChatGPT?**

Click Images in the ChatGPT sidebar to open the Images page, or just ask for an image in any chat. Your images are also kept on the Images page, so you can find them later.

**How do I fix one part of a ChatGPT image?**

Click Edit on the image to open the editor. Choose Comment, click the spot you want changed and describe the change, or type the change in the Describe edits box. Say "Keep everything else the same" so the rest of the image stays put.

**Can ChatGPT make an Instagram Story version?**

Yes. In the image editor, click Resize and choose Story 9:16. ChatGPT makes the image again at that shape, so check the text before you download it.

**Is making images in ChatGPT free?**

Free accounts can create images with lower, slower limits. Paid plans get more. Stepthrough itself is completely free, and this practice copy needs no account.

**Can I use ChatGPT images for my business?**

Yes, for your own marketing. Don't use a real person's likeness without consent, and don't copy other brands' logos, characters or artwork. Check every word on the image before you post it.
