## What you'll build

Dana is the project manager on a made-up dental office fit-out. Every morning she walks the site on a call with the superintendent and the owner’s rep, then types the daily log, a punch list and the follow-ups from her notebook. In this lesson you make the project in Hardline, paste her call notes into a capture, get a daily log with attendees, work done and every issue, plus tasks with due dates, and then ask Assistant for a punch list to review with the owner. Every screen is a real Hardline screen; the job, the builder and the people are made up.

You made a project, captured a site-walk call, and got a daily log with attendees, [conditions](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/conditional-logic), work done and every issue, four tasks with due dates filed to the job, and a punch list with owners and status. You also caught the one issue nobody owned. What it saves: the half hour of typing after every walk, and the item that falls through because it only lived in a notebook. On the phone you can just talk through the walk, and Hardline can also join calls and sync to Procore, Autodesk or Fieldwire after you approve. Plans change; check hardlineapp.com for what yours includes.

## Practice first, then build it for real

Practice copy built from real Hardline screens (app.hardlineapp.com), captured 29 October 2026. Nothing here touches a Hardline account. The project, the builder and the people are made up; the daily log, the tasks and the punch list are what Hardline produced from the sample notes. To build it for real you need your own Hardline account, and some services charge once you use them for real work, so check each tool's current pricing.

## Try it yourself, free

Reading the steps is a start. Doing them is how it sticks. The interactive module walks you through every click in a practice copy of Hardline, checks each step, and never touches your real accounts.

## Step by step: Hardline: Turn a Site-Walk Call into a Daily Log and Punch List

All 20 steps of the interactive module, in order. In the module you watch each one, then do it yourself in a practice copy that checks your work.

### 1. Set up the project

1. **Start a new project.** You are **Dana Ruiz**, the project manager at a made-up builder, **Brightway Builders**. Every morning you walk a site on a call with the superintendent and the owner’s rep, then spend 30 minutes typing the daily log. Open **app.hardlineapp.com**, go to **Projects** and click **New project**.
   You walk the site on a call every morning, then spend half an hour typing the daily log. In Hardline, open Projects and click New project.
2. **Name the project.** One project per job keeps every call, note and task in one place. Name it after the job.
   One project per job keeps every call, note and task together. Name it after the job.
3. **Make it the active project.** Turn on **Make active project**. Everything you capture next goes into this job, so you never have to file notes by hand.
   Turn on Make active project, so everything you capture next lands in this job.
4. **Create the project.** Leave **Share my notes** and **Share my tasks** on, so your team sees them. Click **Create project**.
   Leave sharing on, so your team sees the notes and tasks.

### 2. Capture the site walk

5. **Open Documents.** The project page says **Active project** and **0 notes · 0 tasks**. Now capture this morning’s site walk. Click **Documents** in the sidebar.
   The project is active and empty.
6. **Click Create.** Click **Create**. On the phone app you would tap **Talk** and just describe the walk; on the web you can paste your call notes.
   On your phone you would just talk; on the web you can paste your notes.
7. **Add a note.** The **Project** box already shows **Harbor Point Dental Office Fit-Out** and today’s **Reporting date**, because the project is active. Click **Add note** at the top right.
   The project and today’s date are already filled in.
8. **Paste the site-walk notes.** Paste the notes from the 7:30 call: who was there, weather, crews, work done, a delivery, four issues, an inspection, an owner decision and who does what by when. Messy is fine.
   Who was there, the work, the issues, and who does what by when. Messy is fine.
   ```text
   Site walk call, Oct 29, 7:30 am. Dana Ruiz (PM, Brightway Builders), Marcus Lee (superintendent), Priya Shah (owner's rep, Harbor Point Dental). Weather clear, 54F. Crew on site: 6 drywall (Apex Interiors), 2 electricians (Volt Electric), 1 plumber (Clearline Plumbing). Work today: drywall taping done in exam rooms 1-4, electrical rough-in finished in the lab, plumbing rough-in at the sterilization sink. Delivery: 12 ceiling grid boxes arrived 9 am. Issues: exam room 3 has a cracked drywall corner by the door; the reception counter outlet is 6 inches off the drawing; sterilization room door hardware is missing; water stain on ceiling tile in hallway near the restrooms, Priya wants the source found before tiles go in. Inspection: above-ceiling inspection booked for Monday 10 am. Decision: owner approved moving the X-ray room outlet, change order to follow. Marcus to fix the drywall corner by Friday. Volt to move the reception outlet by Thursday. Dana to order door hardware today and send Priya the change order for the outlet move.
   ```
9. **Add it to the capture.** Click **Add note**.
10. **Let Hardline sort it.** Your note sits under **Notes**, and **1 task running** means Hardline is reading it. Give it 15 to 30 seconds.
    Hardline is reading your note. Give it about twenty seconds.
11. **End the capture.** A **Site Walk** section appears with **8 items**: work progress, the delivery, and each issue with its owner and date. Scroll it in the real app to check them. When it looks right, click **End capture**.
    Hardline split the walk into separate items, each issue with an owner and a date. Check them, then click End capture.

### 3. Review the log and punch list

12. **Title the daily log.** Give it a title you can find later. Date it, so the log reads like a diary of the job.
    Give it a dated title, so you can find it later.
13. **Confirm.** Click **Confirm**. Hardline turns the capture into the finished log.
14. **Read the daily log.** In under a minute: an **Overview**, **Conditions and Attendees**, **Work Progress**, the delivery and each issue as its own heading. That is the daily log you used to type. Scroll down to the bottom.
    Here is the daily log you used to type: overview, attendees, work done, and every issue.
15. **Check the tasks.** At the bottom, **Tasks 4**: fix the drywall corner, move the reception outlet, order the door hardware and send Priya the [change order](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/change-order), each with a due date. The **hallway water stain has no task**, because nobody owned it on the call. Click the project in the sidebar.
    Four tasks, each with a due date. Notice the hallway water stain has no task, because nobody owned it.
16. **Open the log from the project.** The project now shows **1 note · 4 tasks**, all **Shared** with the team. Click the daily log to open it again.
    The project now holds the log and four shared tasks.
17. **Ask Assistant.** Before the owner meeting you want a punch list, not a narrative. Click **Ask Assistant**.
    Before the owner meeting you want a punch list.
18. **Ask for the punch list.** The log is **Attached as context**. Ask for each item with its location, owner, due date and status, and make sure the water stain is on it.
    The log is attached. Ask for a punch list with location, owner, due date and status, including the water stain.
    ```text
    Turn the open issues into a punch list I can review with the owner: item, location, who owns it, due date, and status. Include the hallway water stain even though it has no owner yet.
    ```
19. **Send it.** Click the **send arrow**.
20. **Review before the owner sees it.** Five punch items, each with location, **Owner**, **Due** and **Status**. The water stain says **Owner: Not assigned**, so give it an owner before you meet Priya. Hardline drafts; you approve. Nothing was sent or synced.
    Five punch items with owners, dates and status. The water stain still needs an owner, so assign one before the meeting.
