Quick answer

Web scraping is using software to read web pages and pull out the data you want, such as posts, prices or listings, instead of copying it by hand. You can scrape pages yourself, or pay a service that does the scraping and hands you clean results through an API.

## Why it matters for a small business

Plenty of useful business data sits on public web pages: competitor prices, job posts, reviews, forum threads where customers describe their problems. Copying it by hand is slow and boring, so it gets done once and then forgotten. Scraping turns that chore into a scheduled job that runs before anyone logs in.

The catch is upkeep. A homemade scraper reads the page layout, so it breaks when the site changes a menu or a class name, and some sites block automated visitors. That is why many teams stop scraping themselves and call a scraping or data API instead. The provider keeps up with the sites, and you get the same tidy fields every time, usually for a small fee per request.

## Three ways to get the same web data

| Approach | What you maintain | What you get back |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Copy by hand | Your time, every day | Whatever you remembered to paste |
| Your own scraper | Code that reads each page layout | Raw page text you still have to clean |
| A scraping or data API | One request and a key | The same named fields on every call, as JSON |
| The site's official API | A developer app, its rules and its limits | Data the site chooses to share |

In the [ProLevelMax Reddit lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/prolevelmax-n8n-reddit-rss-replacement), Maya Chen runs marketing at Tallgrass Books, a made-up bookkeeping app. Her n8n workflow reads the newest r/smallbusiness posts each morning, and AI sums up what owners are asking. ProLevelMax is a pay-per-call data API for Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, X and 150+ other platforms, so Maya never writes a scraper or registers a Reddit developer app.

In the console she searches Data sources for the Subreddit feed source, id `procli_reddit_c`, at $0.003 per call. One [HTTP Request node](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/http-request-node) sends that id and two fields, `subreddit_name` and `sort`, and gets back the posts as [JSON](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/json). The same idea runs a competitor price check in the [Litescrape lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/litescrape-n8n-serpapi-alternative), where a search-results API replaces SerpApi.

## Common confusions

### Web scraping vs an official API

An official [API](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/api) is a door the site builds on purpose, with its own keys, rules and [rate limits](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/rate-limit). Scraping reads the pages people see. A data API like ProLevelMax sits in between: you call an API, and the provider does the collecting.

### Web scraping vs an RSS feed

An [RSS feed](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/rss-feed) is a list of new items the site chooses to publish. When a site turns its feed off, scraping or a data API is often the only way to keep getting the same posts.

## Tips

- Read the site's terms before you collect anything, and keep personal details out of what you store.
- Ask for only the fields you will use, so the next step in the workflow stays small.
- Run a new source by hand once and check the output before you put it on a schedule.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is web scraping legal?**

It depends on the site, the data and where you are. Public pages are often fair game, but terms of service and privacy law still apply, so check before you rely on it. This is not legal advice.

**Do I need to code to scrape a website?**

Not always. A data API returns ready-made fields, and n8n calls it with one HTTP Request node. You paste a URL, a key and a short JSON body.

**Why use a scraping API instead of my own scraper?**

Upkeep. When a site changes its layout, your scraper breaks and someone has to fix it. With an API, the provider fixes it and your workflow keeps the same fields.
