A trigger is the event that starts a workflow: a new email, a form submission, a chat message, a set time or a click of a button. Every n8n workflow begins with a trigger node, and nothing after it runs until the trigger fires.

## Why it matters for a small business

Choosing the trigger is choosing how hands-off the automation is. A manual or chat trigger still needs a person to start it. A schedule runs at set times whether or not anyone remembers. An app event, like a new email or a form submission, reacts within seconds or minutes of the thing happening. The same steps behind different triggers can feel like completely different tools.

The trigger also decides what data you start with. A Gmail trigger hands you From, Subject and a thread ID. A form hands you the fields a customer filled in. A schedule hands you nothing but the time, so the workflow has to go and fetch its data. Picking the wrong trigger is a common reason a later step can't find the field it needs.

## In a real lesson: Build an AI Follow-Up Agent for HVAC Service Calls

In the [HVAC follow-up agent lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/hvac-service-follow-up-ai-agent-n8n), you build a follow-up writer for Cedar Ridge Heating & Air, the made-up HVAC company in the lesson. You click **Add first step…** and a panel slides in with every way a workflow can start: manually, on a schedule, on a webhook, on a chat message. You pick **On chat message** near the bottom and close it without changing anything.

That choice fits the job. The office decides when follow-ups go out, so a person types the day's finished calls into **Open chat**: Linda Morales, furnace tune-up; Tom Becker, replaced AC capacitor; Grace Chen, new heat pump install. The message fires the trigger, and the agent writes three follow-ups, two texts and an email for the install.

Other lessons show what changes with a different trigger. [Daily Job Alerts](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/n8n-daily-job-alerts-google-sheets-gmail) uses **On a schedule**, so nobody has to remember. The [AI Email Responder](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ai-email-responder-gmail-drafts-n8n) uses Gmail's **On message received**, which checks the inbox every minute. The Cedar Ridge service request form, in the HVAC Lovable lesson, starts with **On webhook call** instead.

## Common confusions

### Trigger vs action

A trigger starts a workflow; an [action](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/action) is anything the workflow does afterward. Many apps offer both. Gmail has a trigger for new messages and actions for sending or drafting.

### Instant triggers vs timed checks

Some triggers are pushed to n8n the moment something happens, like a [webhook](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/webhook). Others check on a timer, like the Gmail trigger's **Every Minute** setting. That timed checking is called [polling](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/polling), and it means a short delay before the workflow notices.

## Tips

- Ask what event really starts the job in your office, then pick the trigger that matches it.
- Fetch a test event or send one real submission so you can see the trigger's output fields before building the next step.
- App and schedule triggers only fire on their own after the workflow is published.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can an n8n workflow have more than one trigger?**

Yes. A workflow can hold several trigger nodes, for example a schedule plus a manual start, and each one starts the steps connected to it.

**Why doesn't my trigger fire?**

Most often the workflow isn't published, so the trigger only works while you test in the editor. For timed triggers, also check the workflow's timezone in its settings.
