Quick answer

A traffic channel is the group Google Analytics puts each visit (session) in, based on where it came from: Organic Search (Google, Bing), Direct (typed or bookmarked), Organic Social, Referral (a link on another site), Email, Paid Search and a few more. The Traffic acquisition report lists them.

## Why it matters for a small business

Channels are the first answer to "is my marketing working?". If Organic Search brings most engaged visits, writing more useful pages pays off; if the newsletter brings few, try a better subject line before sending more.

Compare Engagement rate as well as Sessions. A channel with fewer visits but a higher engagement rate often brings better leads.

In the free [GA4 traffic sources lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ga4-traffic-sources) you open Acquisition, Traffic acquisition and scroll to the table: one row per Session primary channel group with Sessions, Engaged sessions and Engagement rate.

Opening the dimension menu and picking Session source / medium splits each channel into the exact site and medium, such as google / organic or newsletter / email.

## Common confusions

### Channel vs source / medium

The channel is the group (Organic Social). Source / medium is the exact origin inside it (linkedin.com / referral).

### Direct vs Unassigned

Direct means no referrer at all (typed, bookmarked, some apps). Unassigned means GA4 had information but could not match it to a channel, often because of untagged links.

## Tips

- Add UTM tags to links in newsletters and social posts, so they land in the right channel instead of Direct or Unassigned.
- Look at channels over 90 days before you move budget.
