# What is "Test step" in n8n? > Test step runs one n8n node right now so you can see its real output before you build on. How it differs from testing the whole workflow, with an example. It lets you check each step as you build instead of waiting for the trigger or running the whole workflow. ## Why it matters for a small business Automations fail in boring ways: the wrong spreadsheet tab, a column name with a typo, a filter that drops everything. If you build five steps and then run the lot, you have to hunt for which one went wrong. Testing each step as you add it means every problem shows up right where you caused it, while the settings are still open in front of you. It also teaches you what the data looks like. The output panel shows the actual items a node produced, with field names as labels, and the next node's input panel shows the same data. Those labels are what you point at with [expressions](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/expression), so seeing them is half the work of writing the next step. ## In a real lesson: Daily Job Alerts: Email Each Tech Their Jobs from Google Sheets with n8n The [Daily Job Alerts lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/n8n-daily-job-alerts-google-sheets-gmail) uses Test step twice. You play the office at Rapid Flow Plumbing, a made-up plumbing company. After setting **Google Sheets: Get row(s) in sheet** to the **Today's Jobs** spreadsheet and the **Jobs** tab, the voice-over says not to wait for 7am to find out if it works. You click **Test step**, and the node reads the sheet right then: six items, one per row, with the column names as labels. Then you add a **Filter** that keeps a job only if `{{ $json.Tech }}` **is not empty**, and click **Test step** again. The result is plain on screen: six items in on the left, five out on the right. The sump pump estimate with no tech was dropped, exactly as intended. Only after both steps check out do you add Gmail and click **Test workflow** to run everything together. Test workflow (or Execute workflow) runs the whole chain from the trigger, which can send real emails or write real rows. ### Testing vs publishing Tests run only when you click. A [published workflow](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/publish-workflow) runs by itself whenever its trigger fires. ## Tips - Test each node right after you configure it, before adding the next. - Read the item count, not just the green check. Test the earlier step first, or run the workflow once, so this node has data to work with. **Does Test step send real emails?** Yes. Testing a Gmail send node sends a real email, and testing a Sheets append node writes a real row. Point them at test addresses and sheets while you build.
