Quick answer

Python is a general-purpose programming language known for short, readable code. In offices it is mostly used for data work: totalling, combining and cleaning exports that would otherwise be done by hand in a spreadsheet, usually with the free pandas library.

## Why it matters for a small business

Spreadsheet work that repeats every week or month (total the export, combine the monthly files, fix the names, remove the duplicates) is exactly what a few lines of Python do well. The lines are written once and run again on the next export in seconds, with the same result every time.

You do not need to install anything to start. Google Colab runs Python in a browser tab for free, in notebooks of small cells, and saves them to Google Drive. Each cell shows its answer straight under it, so mistakes show up at once.

Python is also the language most AI tools write when you ask them to analyse a file, so knowing the basics lets you read, check and adjust that code instead of trusting it blindly. A good first goal is one job you already do by hand every month. Write it as a notebook once, keep it in Drive, and next month change only the file name. The time saved grows with every run, and the notebook doubles as a written record of exactly how the numbers were made.

In the free [Python sales report lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/python-sales-report), Priya (made up) types six orders into a Colab notebook as two lists and turns them into a pandas table.

One line, sales['amount'].sum(), gives the quarter's $8,180. Two more, a groupby and a sort, rank the customers: Cobalt Legal $3,170, Maple Dental $2,230, Northside Realty $2,140 and Harbor Accounting $640.

## Common confusions

### Python vs pandas

Python is the language. pandas is a free add-on library for tables that most Python data work uses.

### Python vs Excel macros (VBA)

VBA only runs inside Office. Python runs anywhere, handles much larger files and is the language most data and AI tools speak.

## Tips

- Start in Google Colab: nothing to install, and every notebook saves to your Drive.
- Press Shift+Enter to run a cell; Enter only adds a new line inside it.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need to install Python to learn it?**

No. Google Colab (colab.research.google.com) runs Python in your browser for free with a Google account.

**Is Python hard for non-programmers?**

The data basics are short: load pandas, read a table, total or group it. Most office tasks need fewer than ten lines.

**Can Python read my Excel or CSV exports?**

Yes. pandas reads CSV files with pd.read_csv and Excel files with pd.read_excel.
