Quick answer

Prompt versioning means saving each change to an important prompt as a new, numbered version, with the date, what changed, why, and how it scored on your tests. If the new version does worse, you can go straight back to the last good one instead of trying to remember what the old wording was.

## Why it matters for a small business

A prompt that runs a business process is a piece of work like a spreadsheet formula. People tweak it, a teammate "improves" it, the model changes underneath it, and one day the results are worse with no record of why. Versions turn that mystery into a short list of changes you can test one at a time.

It doesn't need special software. A shared document or sheet with columns for version, date, change, reason and test result is enough for most offices. Teams with developers often keep prompts in Git next to the code, and some AI platforms have their own prompt history. What matters is the habit: change one thing, test it on the same inputs, write it down.

## In a real lesson: Turn a Great Prompt into Reusable Instructions

In [Turn a Great Prompt into Reusable Instructions](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/turn-chatgpt-prompt-into-project-instructions), Mike's estimate prompt is split into rules and blanks, and the rules go into the Ridgeline Estimates project's instructions. The first test, a one-line request for Dave Kim's condenser, shows a gap in the Total line: the rules didn't say what to do when the prices were missing.

You add one rule, ask first if the prices, name or address are missing, save, and send the same request again. This time ChatGPT asks for the prices. The lesson doesn't name it, but that is version 1 and version 2, tested on the same input. Writing down "v2: added ask-first rule, fixed missing-price total" is all prompt versioning asks.

## Common confusions

### Prompt versioning vs prompt library

A prompt library collects many different prompts. Versioning tracks the history of one prompt as it changes.

### Prompt versions vs model versions

You control your prompt versions. The AI vendor controls model versions, and a model update can change results even if your prompt didn't change.

## Tips

- Change one thing per version, so you know what caused the difference.
- Test each version on the same saved inputs before you switch to it.
- Note which model each version was tested on.

## Frequently asked questions

**Do I need version control for a prompt I use once?**

No. It is worth it for prompts that run every week, sit inside a workflow or are shared by a team.

**What should a version note include?**

The version number, date, what changed, why, which model it was tested on and the test result.

**How do I know a new version is better?**

Run the old and new versions on the same inputs and compare the answers side by side against the same checks.
