Quick answer

A negative prompt is the part of an image prompt that lists what you don't want: extra text, a second logo, blurry hands, a watermark. Tools built on Stable Diffusion give it its own box, Midjourney uses a --no parameter, and ChatGPT takes it as a plain sentence in the brief.

## Why it matters for a small business

Image models fill gaps with whatever looks typical. Ask for a sale poster and you may get made-up slogans, a misspelled sign or a stock-photo person you never wanted. Naming what to leave out narrows the result, and it is often faster than fixing an image afterwards.

How you say it depends on the tool. In a separate negative prompt box you list the unwanted things on their own. In a chat-style tool, a clear rule such as "No other text" works better than a long list, because some image models can be nudged toward a thing just by its being named. Either way, read every word of the result.

## In a real lesson: Make Images with ChatGPT for Your Business

In [Make Images with ChatGPT for Your Business](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/make-images-with-chatgpt-for-your-business), the Fern & Stone Garden Center brief puts every word for the mum sale poster in quotes and ends with "No other text." The lesson calls the quoted words and that line the two lines that stop made-up dates and extra signs. ChatGPT has no separate negative prompt box, so the rule lives in the brief.

The practice draft still adds a chalkboard sign that says "MUMS SAEL!!", so you fix it in the editor: remove the small chalkboard sign on the left, change nothing else. In [VisualGPT](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/visualgpt-product-photos-listing-images-ads), Fernway's brief does the same in words: no made-up awards, reviews or numbers.

## Common confusions

### Negative prompt vs prompt constraints

Constraints are any limits in a prompt, such as length or tone. A negative prompt is the image-tool habit of listing what must not appear.

### Negative prompt vs editing

A negative prompt prevents something before the image is made. An edit removes it afterwards from an image you already have.

## Tips

- Put every word you want on the image in quotes and add "No other text."
- Keep the "leave out" list short and specific: a vague list is easy for the model to ignore.
- If something unwanted still appears, remove it with an edit and say "change nothing else".

## Frequently asked questions

**Does ChatGPT support negative prompts?**

Not as a separate field. Write what to leave out in the brief, for example "No other text" or "no people".

**How do I stop AI adding text to my image?**

Quote the exact words you want and end the prompt with "No other text." Then check every word in the result.

**What should a negative prompt include?**

Only things that keep showing up or would ruin the image, such as extra text, watermarks, blur or extra fingers.
