An interview debrief is a short meeting right after interviews where the people who met a candidate share what they heard, rate them against the job's requirements and agree what happens next, such as another round, reference checks or an offer.

## Why it matters for a small business

Each interviewer sees a slice of the candidate. Without a debrief, those slices never get compared, the loudest opinion wins, and follow-up tasks like calling references fall between people. A well-run debrief puts the evidence side by side while memories are fresh and ends with owners and dates.

The person running it matters as much as the format. Going requirement by requirement, asking for what the candidate actually said, and stopping comments that aren't about the job all keep the conversation fair. This page is general information, not legal or HR advice: follow your company's hiring policy and the law where you hire, and have HR or an employment attorney review your process.

## In a real lesson: Turn an Interview Debrief into a Scorecard and a Candidate Follow-Up (Recruiting & HR)

The [Interview Debrief to Scorecard lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-interview-debrief-scorecard) starts from the transcript of a panel debrief at Willow Bend Physical Therapy, a made-up practice. Hannah Cole, the HR manager, runs it with two interviewers, Marcus Reed and Jess Okafor, for a Front Desk Lead candidate.

Hannah sets the rules in her first line: "let's go must-have by must-have and stick to what she actually said." When a comment drifts to the candidate's family, she stops it: "Let's leave that out. It's not about the job, and we don't weigh it." When pay comes up, she parks it for the practice owner instead of deciding in the room.

The debrief ends with three decisions (a final round with Dr. Patel, asking about training staff there, no offer until references are checked) and a set of tasks. You hand the transcript to ChatGPT, which turns it into a scorecard, decisions, an action items table and open questions. Two tasks come back with no due date, so you add them: Hannah sets up the final interview by Thursday, and Jess calls both references by Friday.

## Common confusions

### Debrief vs scorecard

The debrief is the conversation. The [interview scorecard](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/interview-scorecard) is the structured record that comes out of it, with a rating and evidence for each requirement.

### Debrief vs hiring decision

A debrief can end with "move forward" or "not a fit," but the final decision often waits for references, another round or an owner's approval, as in the lesson.

## Tips

- Hold the debrief the same day, before interviewers compare notes informally.
- Have each interviewer write their ratings before the meeting, so the first speaker doesn't anchor everyone.
- End with a task list with owners and dates, and send it right after.

## Frequently asked questions

**Who should attend an interview debrief?**

Only the people who interviewed the candidate, plus whoever runs the hiring process. More voices without evidence just adds noise.

**Is it OK to record a debrief for AI to summarize?**

Check your company's policy and the consent rules where you are first. If you do, keep the transcript private and leave out anything not about the job.
