Quick answer

Heading styles are named formats in Word, such as Title, Heading 1 and Heading 2, that set a line's font, size, colour and spacing in one click and also mark it as a heading in the document's structure. You apply them from the Styles box on the Home tab.

## Why it matters for a small business

Documents made by changing fonts by hand drift: one heading is 16 point, the next 15, one is blue and one is bold black. Fixing that takes time every month, and the document still has no structure, so the Navigation pane, a table of contents and screen readers cannot tell headings from body text.

A style fixes both at once. Every Heading 1 looks the same, and changing the Heading 1 style later changes every heading that uses it. In Word for the web, click in the line, open the arrow next to the Styles box (it says Normal) and pick Title, Heading 1 or Heading 2.

## In a real lesson: Word for the Web: Turn Meeting Notes into a Client Update

In the free [Word for the web client update lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/word-web-client-update), Dana (made up), an account manager at Northgate IT, starts with rough meeting notes for her client Harbor Accounting: eight plain lines, all in the Normal style.

She clicks in the first line and picks Title, then gives Summary, What we did and Next steps the Heading 1 style. In two minutes the notes have a large title and three matching blue section headings, and next month's update can reuse the same look.

## Common confusions

### Heading styles vs bold text

Bold only changes how text looks. A heading style also tells Word the line is a heading, which the Navigation pane, a table of contents and screen readers use.

### Title vs Heading 1

Title is for the one line at the top of the document. Heading 1 is for each main section under it; Heading 2 for sections inside those.

## Tips

- Use the headings in order: Heading 1 for sections, Heading 2 only inside a Heading 1 section.
- To change how all headings look, change the style once instead of each heading.
