It does not look up a stored answer; it produces a fresh one each time based on patterns it learned. ## Why it matters for a small business Most of the AI a small business touches day to day is generative: drafting a customer email, writing an estimate description, turning notes into a social post, producing a first version of a policy. The value is speed on the blank-page part of the job. A draft that takes you twenty minutes from scratch takes two minutes to check and adjust. Because it creates rather than retrieves, generative AI fills gaps with whatever sounds plausible. Give it a vague request and you get a generic answer with blanks or invented details. Give it your real facts and a clear task, and the same tool produces something you can actually send. The first prompt is one sentence: "Write an email to my customers about our new service." The answer is long and generic, opens with "Dear Valued Customer" and leaves blanks such as **[Your Company Name]**, because the model had nothing real to build from. Then you start a **New chat** and build the prompt in four parts. **Paste role** says you are the owner of Summit Lawn Care, a made-up family-run lawn company in Harrisburg, PA. **Paste context** adds the customers, the new core aeration and overseeding service, $149 for most yards, and the September 29 to October 17 window. **Paste task** asks for a short announcement with one call to action, and **Paste format** sets under 120 words, no emoji, subject line first. The second answer uses the real name, price and dates. Nothing about the model changed between the two attempts; only the material it had to generate from did. Generative AI writes a new answer, which can blend real information with invented details. If you need a source you can cite, ask for one and check it. ### Generative AI vs predictive AI Older business AI mostly predicted or classified: will this customer cancel, is this email spam. Generative AI produces new content. Many modern tools do both, for example sorting a lead as hot or warm and then writing the reply. ## Tips - Give it facts it cannot guess: names, prices, dates, policies.
