# What is a discovery call?

> A discovery call is a first conversation to learn what a prospect needs before you pitch. See how a demo request form collects the same facts up front.

Quick answer

A discovery call is an early conversation, often 15 to 30 minutes, where a salesperson or consultant asks questions to learn the prospect's problem, team, timeline and budget before proposing anything. The goal is to understand first and pitch second.

## Why it matters for a small business

Pitching before you understand the problem wastes both sides' time. A discovery call lets you hear the situation in the prospect's own words, find out who else is involved in the decision and decide honestly whether you can help. Sometimes the best outcome is a polite "this is not a fit," which saves everyone a long chase.

Good calls follow a short list of questions: what is not working today, how big is the team, what happens if nothing changes, and when do they want it solved. The answers feed straight into a proposal. If you capture some of them in a form before the call, the live conversation can skip the basics and go deeper.

## In a real lesson: Build an AI Demo Request Form That Qualifies Leads

The [AI Demo Request Form lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ai-demo-request-form-lead-qualification) does not run a call, but it automates the paperwork around one. You build a "Book a demo" page in Lovable for Northwind Scheduling Software, a made-up scheduling software company. It asks for **Name**, **Email**, **What do you need help with?** and **Team size**, and sends them to an n8n webhook.

Those last two fields are classic discovery questions. In the system message the agent rates each lead with a rule: "Hot: 5 or more staff and wants to switch within a month. Warm: a clear need but no timeline. Nurture: just looking." It saves the lead to a Google Sheet called **Leads** and emails one next step, such as two demo times this week for a hot lead.

A salesperson who opens that sheet before the real call already knows who the person is, what they asked for and how many people they have. The form does not replace talking to the prospect. It just means the human conversation starts one step further along.

## Common confusions

### Discovery call vs demo

A discovery call is mostly you asking and listening. A demo is mostly you showing the product. Doing the demo first, before you know the problem, is the most common way to show the wrong features.

### Discovery call vs lead qualification

[Lead qualification](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/lead-qualification) is deciding whether a lead is worth pursuing. Discovery is one way to gather the facts for that decision, though a form or an email can do some of it too.

## Tips

- Write five or six questions in advance, and spend most of the call letting the prospect talk.
- Send a short recap email afterward in the prospect's own words so they can correct anything you misheard.
- If you use a form first, keep it to four or five fields. Every extra field costs you some sign-ups.

## Frequently asked questions

**How long should a discovery call be?**

Fifteen to thirty minutes is typical for small deals. Bigger purchases with several decision makers may need a longer call or a second one. Ask for the time up front so nobody feels ambushed.

**Can AI listen to the call and write the notes?**

A transcript can be summarized with a clear request, as in the meeting-summary lessons. Tell people you are recording, follow your company policy on AI tools and check the notes before anyone relies on them.
