A declarations page, or dec page, is the summary at the front of an insurance policy. It lists the policyholder, what is insured, the policy period, each coverage with its limits and deductibles, and the premium. It is the quickest place to check what a specific policy actually includes.

## Why it matters for a small business

When a client asks "am I covered for this?", the declarations page is where the answer starts. It shows whether a coverage is on the policy at all and its limits. The full policy wording and the carrier's decision still matter, but the dec page keeps everyone from guessing.

For AI-drafted replies, it is the best source of facts. Paste in what the dec page says, not what policies usually include, and an AI draft can be checked line by line. This page is general information. Only the policy, the carrier and a licensed agent can confirm coverage, so have a licensed professional review any reply about coverage before it goes out.

In the [Reply Faster: Claim-Status Emails lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-reply-claim-status-emails-insurance-agency), Denise Harper asks the made-up Stonebridge Insurance Agency whether her policy covers a rental while her CR-V waits for inspection. The facts you give ChatGPT answer from her declarations page: "Rental reimbursement, $40 per day, up to $1,200 per claim. Harbor Mutual approves the rental and the dates it covers."

ChatGPT's first draft drifts away from those numbers. It tells Denise she is covered for a rental "the whole time your CR-V is in the shop." The claim-check table marks that line Only partly supported, quoting the daily amount and the per-claim cap.

The lesson's closing advice names the dec page directly: paste the claim facts, "what the declarations page actually shows and who decides what." The final reply says yes, up to a limit, gives both numbers, and tells Denise to call her adjuster to set the rental up.

## Common confusions

### Declarations page vs full policy

The dec page summarizes what you bought. The full policy has the definitions, conditions and exclusions that decide how a claim is handled. A coverage listed on the dec page can still have limits explained only in the policy.

### Declarations page vs insurance ID card

An ID card proves you have coverage, for example to show police. It usually doesn't list limits or deductibles. The dec page does.

## Tips

- Keep a current dec page in each client's file and check the policy period before quoting it.
- Copy limits into your AI facts exactly, with units like "per day" and "per claim".
- Leave policy numbers and personal details out of anything you paste into AI.

## Frequently asked questions

**Where do I find my declarations page?**

It usually comes with your policy documents and at each renewal, and many carriers post it in their online account. Your agent can send a copy.

**If a coverage is on the dec page, is my claim approved?**

Not automatically. The carrier still reviews the claim under the full policy. Ask the carrier or a licensed agent about a specific claim.
