Quick answer

Build vs buy is the decision between making your own software for a job and paying for an existing product that does it. Building gives you exactly what you need; buying gives you someone else to carry the security, backups, updates and support.

## Why it matters for a small business

For years small businesses simply bought: writing software meant hiring a developer. AI app builders such as Lovable changed the sum. A small internal tool can now be described in plain English and working in a minute or two, often for less than one month of a per-seat subscription.

The cost that has not gone away is looking after what you build. Someone has to fix it when it breaks, keep it safe and change it when the way you work changes. A vendor spreads that work over thousands of customers; your own tool is your job.

## In a real lesson: Lovable: Build or Buy? Vibe Code an Office App in One Prompt

In the free [build or buy lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/lovable-build-vs-buy), Northfield Accounting (made up, 14 staff) would pay about $1,008 a year for an asset-tracking app to use two of its features. The office manager describes an equipment sign-out board to Lovable in one prompt instead, and gets a working board for 1 credit.

Lovable also says plainly what the first version does not do: the data is kept in each person's browser, so coworkers do not share one board yet. That is the kind of limit the build-or-buy decision has to weigh.

## Common confusions

### Build vs buy vs no-code

No-code tools sit in between: you assemble a tool from ready-made blocks inside someone else's product. With [vibe coding](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/vibe-coding) an AI writes real code that you own and can take elsewhere.

### Cheap to build is not cheap to own

The minute it took to make a tool is the smallest cost. Count the time to fix, update and secure it over a year.

## Tips

- Build small, internal, low-risk tools that fit how you work.
- Buy anything that holds money, payroll, health or legal data, or that must never go down.
- Before building, write down who will look after the tool and what happens if they leave.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is it cheaper to build or buy software?**

For a small internal tool, building with an AI app builder is often cheaper: our sign-out board cost 1 credit against about $1,008 a year for an app. For anything with money, payroll or personal data, buying is usually cheaper once you count security and support.

**Can a non-developer build business software?**

Small tools, yes. AI app builders such as Lovable write the code from a plain-English description. Anything that stores customer data needs logins and access rules, and is worth a check by someone who builds software.

**What is the biggest risk of building your own tool?**

Nobody looking after it. A tool that one person built and only that person understands becomes a problem when it breaks or when they leave.
