AI image generation is creating pictures from a text description, or editing an existing image with written instructions, using AI models trained on large collections of images. Common uses include social graphics, product mockups and illustrations, made in minutes instead of a photo shoot.

## Why it matters for a small business

For a small business with no designer, image tools can fill the gap between "no visual" and the stock photo everyone else uses: a seasonal banner, a background for a promo post, an illustration for a blog. Drafting several options quickly also helps you brief a designer on what you want.

The limits are real. Images can contain warped text, wrong details or invented features, which matters if the picture shows your product, your storefront or a result a customer will expect. Avoid realistic images of real people without permission, check the tool's terms on commercial use, and never present a generated picture as a photo of actual work.

## In a real lesson: Build an n8n AI Agent That Plans Your Content Calendar

Stepthrough has no image generation lesson. The [content calendar agent lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/n8n-ai-agent-content-calendar) shows where images fit into the work. You build an n8n agent for Harbor & Pine Coffee Roasters, a made-up small online coffee brand, that turns one campaign theme into a two-week email and social calendar in a **Campaign Calendar** sheet with Date, Channel, Topic, Draft Copy and Status columns.

The test prompt asks for a two-week email and social calendar for the Holiday Ember Blend launch, starting Monday Nov 2, with free shipping over $35. The system prompt mixes email with Instagram and Facebook posts, gives each item a different angle (launch, how it is made, how to brew it, gifting, customer questions) and marks every row "Draft".

Each Instagram and Facebook row will need a visual, and the topic and draft copy in that row make a ready-made brief for an image tool. The system prompt's rules apply to the picture too: no invented offers or health claims, and a person approves it before it goes live.

## Common confusions

### Generating vs editing an image

Generating creates a new image from a description. Editing changes an existing one. For product posts, editing a real photo of your product is often safer than generating the product from nothing.

### AI images vs stock photos

Stock photos come with clear licenses and show real scenes. AI images can be fully custom, but rules on commercial use and ownership vary by tool and are still developing.

### AI image generation vs multimodal AI

[Multimodal AI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/multimodal-ai) reads or produces more than one kind of content. Reading a receipt photo, as in the receipt extractor lesson, is the reverse of [generative AI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/generative-ai) making a picture.

## Tips

- Describe the subject, setting, style and shape (square or vertical) in the prompt.
- Avoid text inside generated images, or check every letter if you keep it.
- Save the prompt with the image so you can make consistent variations later.
