A chat assistant that answers a question is not very agentic. A system that reads a list of late orders, writes a message for each, saves them to a tracker and reports back is more agentic, because it chose and carried out the steps between your request and the result. More independence means more work done and more ways to go wrong. Each step an AI takes without a person is a step where a wrong guess can spread: a wrong date copied into ten messages, a row written to the wrong sheet. You send one request: Tallpine Pallet Co., PO 4471, 5 days late; Corrugo Box Supply, PO 4480, no ship date; Northwind Wrap, PO 4492, 12 rolls short. From that single message the agent works through the job. It writes a separate follow-up for each order, following the system message rules: name the PO, state the problem in one sentence, ask one clear question and give a reply-by date of 1 business day if late or 2 if pending. When you say **Yes, save those follow-ups to the sheet**, it uses the Google Sheets tool to add a row per vendor to **Vendor Follow-Ups**, with Vendor, Order, Issue, Follow-up Message and Due Date. The limits are part of the design. The agent cannot send anything to vendors, it is told "Do not threaten to cancel orders or invent penalties," and the sheet is where a person reviews every message before it goes out. That is agentic AI at a sensible size for an office. Agentic AI is the broader quality of acting on its own over several steps. Vendors use the adjective loosely, so ask what the product actually does without you. ### Agentic AI vs automation A fixed automation follows the same steps every time. Agentic AI chooses its steps from what it reads.
