Quick answer

[Simple Memory](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/agent-memory) is the [n8n node](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/node) that lets an [AI Agent](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/ai-agent) remember the recent conversation, so a follow-up like "Yes, save those ideas to the sheet" knows which ideas you mean. It keeps that history inside n8n itself, with no database or extra credentials. This guide is for anyone building their first n8n agent, and the free [n8n AI Agent lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/n8n-ai-agent-tutorial-google-sheets) adds Simple Memory to a social media ideas agent in about 12 minutes.

n8n Simple Memory explained: what it keeps, why "save those ideas to the sheet" needs it, how email agents key it by thread, and when an agent needs none.

**Transcript**

In ChatGPT, you can follow up on what you just asked. An n8n agent can't, unless you add Simple Memory. In the lesson, you ask for three post ideas. Then you type, yes, save those ideas to the sheet. Without memory, those ideas means nothing. The agent would have nothing to save. Simple Memory keeps the recent conversation, inside n8n, with no database or extra credentials. The receipt lesson keeps the last five messages. Ask one question. Will anyone send a second message about the first? If yes, add memory. A form agent gets one complete job per run, so skip it. Memory isn't permanent. Prices, hours and rules go in the system message. Anything you need to keep goes in a sheet. Practice it step by step, free, in AI Social Media Idea Agent.

Memory is one of four slots under the AI Agent node, next to Chat Model and Tool. It's also the one beginners are most likely to skip, misread, or delete when it throws an error. Here's what it actually does.

## What does Simple Memory do in n8n?

Simple Memory stores the most recent messages of a conversation and hands them to the AI Agent with each new message. Without it, every message starts from nothing.

The lesson puts it in one sentence: "Without memory the agent forgets each message." When you click the **+** under **Memory** and pick **Simple Memory**, the lesson describes it as keeping "the recent conversation inside n8n, no database, no extra credentials."

An AI model on its own doesn't remember earlier messages. Each request to the model is separate. Memory is what n8n adds so the agent sees the conversation so far, not just the newest line.

## How much does Simple Memory remember?

Simple Memory keeps a limited window of recent messages, keyed to a session. In the [AI Receipt Extractor lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ai-receipt-extractor-n8n-google-sheets), the node remembers "the last 5 messages of each chat session," and the lesson calls that plenty.

That window is a feature, not a flaw. Each message in memory gets sent to the model with the next request, so a short window keeps requests small. For a task like "read this receipt, now recategorize it," five messages covers everything that matters. You can leave the defaults, as the lessons do.

## Why does "save those ideas to the sheet" need memory?

A follow-up message only makes sense if the agent remembers what came before it. In the n8n AI Agent lesson, you ask a made-up agency's agent, BrightPath Marketing, for "3 social media post ideas about how small businesses can use ChatGPT to improve their advertising." It returns three: LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook, each with a hook, description and call to action.

Then you type: "Yes, save those ideas to the sheet." The agent uses its **Google Sheets Tool** to write each idea as a row with Platform, Post Topic, Hook, Description and Call to Action columns.

Without memory, that second message arrives alone. "Those ideas" refers to nothing, so the agent has nothing to save. The lesson says it directly: without memory, "you could not say save those ideas to the sheet, because it would not remember what ideas you were talking about."

The same two-step pattern appears in other lessons. The expense categorizer agent sorts a batch of expenses, then "Yes, save those expenses to the sheet" writes them to an Expense Log. The receipt agent uses memory so you can say "actually, call that one office supplies" and it knows which receipt you mean.

## What is a session, and why does memory need one?

A session is one conversation, and Simple Memory needs a session ID to know which messages belong together. With the **On chat message** trigger, n8n's chat provides that ID automatically, so the defaults work.

Think of a shared office inbox. If every conversation went into one pile, the agent would mix up customers. The session ID keeps each conversation's memory separate.

## How does Simple Memory work for an email agent?

An email agent has no chat session, so you key memory to the email thread instead. In the [AI Email Responder lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/ai-email-responder-gmail-drafts-n8n), the first test run fails with "No session ID found" in Simple Memory. The fix is to open the node, set **Session ID** to **Define below** and use `{{ $json.threadId }}` as the key.

As the lesson explains, every email conversation has its own thread, so memory then keeps one conversation per customer. If the customer writes back, the agent remembers what it already told them. The full walkthrough of that error is in [Fix "No session ID found" in n8n Simple Memory](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/blog/n8n-no-session-id-found). The lesson also notes that deleting the memory node is the quick fix many people reach for, and that keying it to the thread is better.

## When don't you need memory at all?

You don't need memory when every run is a single, complete job with nothing to follow up on. Several lessons leave it out on purpose:

- **Form-based agents.** The Lovable + n8n lessons use **On webhook call**: each form submission arrives complete, the agent saves it and sends one email, and there's no second message. Those workflows have a Chat Model and tools, and no Memory node.
- **Fixed automations.** The Daily Job Alerts workflow has no AI Agent at all, so memory doesn't apply.

A simple test: will anyone ever send this agent a second message that refers to the first? If yes, add memory. If every run stands alone, skip it.

## Is Simple Memory permanent?

No. Simple Memory is short-term working memory for a conversation, not a record. Anything you need to keep belongs in a real place, like a Google Sheet or a draft. That's why the lessons always end with a tool that writes somewhere: rows in a sheet, a draft in Gmail.

For long-term storage of conversations, n8n offers other memory options backed by databases. Those need their own setup and credentials, and the lessons don't cover them, so check n8n's documentation if you need one.

## What are common Simple Memory mistakes?

Most memory problems come from the trigger, not the memory node. Watch for these:

1. **Adding memory to a non-chat trigger without a session key.** Email and webhook triggers don't supply a chat session ID. Define one, such as the thread ID.
2. **Deleting memory to make an error go away.** The error disappears, and so does the agent's ability to handle follow-ups.
3. **Relying on memory for facts.** Prices, hours and rules go in the system message, where the agent reads them every time.
4. **Expecting memory across conversations.** A new chat session or a new email thread starts fresh.

[n8n AI Agent Tutorial: Build Your First Agent](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/blog/n8n-ai-agent-tutorial) shows where memory fits among the other parts.

## What does it cost to use Simple Memory?

Simple Memory itself needs no account or credential; it runs inside n8n. The lessons are free and run in practice copies. A real agent needs n8n (n8n Cloud is paid after a free trial, or self-host it) and an OpenAI API key, which is pay-as-you-go and billed separately from ChatGPT plans; the lessons suggest about $10 of credit. Because remembered messages are sent along with each request, a short memory window also keeps API usage modest. More lessons are on the [n8n tool page](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/tool/n8n).

## Key takeaways

- Simple Memory lets an n8n AI Agent remember recent messages, so follow-ups like "Yes, save those ideas to the sheet" work.
- Simple Memory keeps the conversation inside n8n with no database or extra credentials; the receipt lesson notes it keeps the last 5 messages per chat session.
- Memory needs a session ID; the chat trigger provides one, and an email agent can use `{{ $json.threadId }}` instead.
- Form-based agents that handle one complete submission per run don't need a Memory node.
- Facts the agent must always use belong in the system message, not in memory.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is Simple Memory in n8n?**

Simple Memory is a memory node for the AI Agent that keeps recent conversation messages inside n8n, so the agent can understand follow-up messages.

**Why does my agent forget what I just said?**

The agent probably has no memory attached, or each message arrives with a different session ID. Add Simple Memory under the agent and check its session key.

**Does Simple Memory need a credential?**

No. Simple Memory runs inside n8n with no database or extra credentials.

**Do I need memory for a form submission agent?**

Usually not. Each form submission is one complete job, so the Lovable + n8n lessons leave memory out.

**Is BrightPath Marketing a real company?**

No. BrightPath Marketing and its social media ideas are made-up examples used in the lesson.
