Quick answer

To get a creative brief from ChatGPT that a client can sign off on, don't ask for it in one sentence. Paste an [interview prompt](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/interview-prompt) instead: ChatGPT asks you up to five questions, one at a time, makes no assumptions, sums up what it understood, and writes the brief only after you say OK. The free [ChatGPT creative brief lesson](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/chatgpt-creative-brief-interview-prompt-agency) shows both ways side by side in about 7 minutes, then saves the [prompt](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/prompt) as a template for your next client.

The example is made up. Northgate Creative is a made-up five-person marketing agency, and its client Tidewell Coffee Roasters, owner Lena Ortiz and every number are made up too. The lesson runs on practice copies of ChatGPT and Google Docs, so no account is needed and nothing is sent to [OpenAI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/openai). This is our own lesson, not an official OpenAI course.

## What goes wrong with the quick prompt?

The lesson first pastes the quick version: *Write a creative brief for a client's spring campaign.* ChatGPT returns something that looks finished. Look closer and it has blanks like **[Client Name]** and **[Budget]**, an audience of 18 to 34 year olds you never mentioned, channels like TikTok and LinkedIn nobody budgeted for, and goals like **"increase brand awareness by 50%"** that no one agreed to. Your result will differ a little.

Blanks are easy to spot. The made-up details are the expensive ones, because they look plausible and the designers build on them. ChatGPT had to guess, because it knew nothing about the client.

## How does the interview prompt work?

You click **New chat** in the sidebar and paste this:

*I need a creative brief for my marketing agency's client campaign. Before you write anything, interview me: ask me up to 5 questions, one at a time, and wait for my answer before you ask the next one. Don't make assumptions. When you have enough, sum up what you understood in a few bullet points and wait for my OK. Then write the brief.*

"One at a time" matters: it's how a good account lead runs a kickoff call. The [interview prompt](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/interview-prompt) entry explains the idea in a paragraph.

## What questions does ChatGPT ask?

In the lesson it asks four:

1. Who is the client, what do they sell, and what is the campaign supposed to achieve? (Answer: 300 new coffee subscriptions between March 2 and April 26.)
2. Who exactly are you trying to reach, and what do they think about the product today? (Regulars aged 30 to 55 who think subscriptions lock you in and cost more.)
3. What's the budget, which channels are in and out, and when is the creative due?
4. How should it sound, what must every piece include or avoid, and who signs off?

Real ChatGPT may word its questions differently, ask them in a different order or ask a different number. Answer what it asks. On some plans and modes it shows a question as a card with choices; pick one, or type your own.

## What does the finished brief include?

The real client, one goal you can measure with a date, the real audience and the doubt the creative has to answer, the budget and channels (including what is out of scope: no TikTok, no influencers), the one offer (first bag free), the line every piece must carry ("Pause or skip any time."), the claim to avoid ("best coffee in Richmond"), deliverables, sign-off dates, and how results will be measured. Nothing is blank or made up. A measurable goal like this is a real [KPI](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/kpi), not an invented one.

## Key takeaways

- A one-line prompt makes ChatGPT guess the audience, budget, channels and goals.
- The interview prompt makes it ask first, one question at a time.
- Say what is out of scope as clearly as what is in.
- Check the summary before you say go ahead.
- Save the prompt as a template with two blanks.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does ChatGPT stop at four questions?**

You said **up to** 5. In the lesson four were enough, so it summed up what it understood and waited.

**What do I do with the summary?**

Check every line. If something is wrong, say so. A misunderstanding is cheap to fix while it is one bullet. In the lesson everything is right, so you click **Paste reply** ("Looks right. Go ahead.") and send it.

**Will ChatGPT's memory change the result?**

The lesson notes that if ChatGPT's memory is on, it may fill in some details from your past chats, even in the quick prompt.

**How do I copy the brief?**

Click the **Copy** icon under the brief. Real ChatGPT may put the brief in its own box with a copy icon at the top right; either works. Have the account lead read it, then send it to the client for sign-off before the creative team starts.

**Where does the template go?**

Click the **Google Docs** tab, click into the **Prompt Templates** doc, click **Paste heading** (**Interview prompt**) and then **Paste template**. The template is the same prompt with **[WHAT YOU NEED]** and **[MY BUSINESS]** left as blanks, a simple [prompt template](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/prompt-template).

**What else can the template write?**

The lesson suggests a campaign recap, a social calendar, a case study or a proposal: anything where a generic answer would cost you a revision round.

**Can I put client information into ChatGPT?**

Follow your agency's policy. Keep anything your client told you in confidence, like unreleased prices or sales numbers, out of chats unless your policy allows it.

**Where can I read about the common slip-ups?**
