A client webinar is recorded in one take: the host is quiet, the guest is loud, and there is a hiss under both. Fixing that by hand in an audio editor takes an afternoon, and the recording is worth most the day it happens. Auphonic (auphonic.com) is a website that levels the volume between speakers, removes background noise and sets the final loudness automatically. In this free lesson you use a practice copy of it to clean up a made-up webinar for a made-up consulting firm: you add the file, look at the three fixes, run the production and read the gain curve that shows what changed. You can also download the made-up sample recording and try the real thing on a free Auphonic account.

## What you will do: one webinar recording, start to finish

You are helping Maya, the marketing manager at Northfield Partners, a made-up consulting firm. Her team recorded a client webinar on a budget microphone setup. The host, Sarah, is much quieter than the guest, Brian, and there is a steady hiss underneath. Maya wants to post it today and does not have an audio editor or an editor's time.

In the practice copy you add the recording on Auphonic's New Production page, open the three fixes that are already switched on (Noise Reduction, Adaptive Leveler and Loudness Normalization), look at [Speech Recognition](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/speech-to-text), name the production, start it, confirm, and read the result page.

## Who this is for

Marketing and operations people who record webinars, client calls, internal trainings or a podcast and need them to sound professional without learning audio editing. You do not need any audio experience. The lesson is a practice copy, so nothing is uploaded and you do not need an Auphonic account to take it.

## Step 1: add the file and look at the three fixes

On the New Production page, click Choose a file and pick the recording. Under Processing, Audio Algorithms has Filtering and Enhancement, Noise Reduction, Adaptive Leveler and Loudness Normalization switched on by default, and Automatic Cutting off.

Open Noise Reduction: it uses the Dynamic method, which keeps speech and music and removes everything else, with Remove Noise and Remove Reverb at 100 dB (full). Open the Adaptive Leveler: Default Leveler mode, Leveler Strength 100% and Compressor Auto. Open Loudness Normalization: the target is -16 LUFS, labelled Podcasts and Mobile. For a first run you can leave all of them alone.

## Step 2: what you cannot do on the free plan

Maya also wants a transcript. Speech Recognition and Automatic Shownotes showed a note in our free account saying speech recognition is only available for paying users, with a link to add [credits](https://learn.ynteractive.com/content/glossary/ai-credits). The cleanup itself still runs. A free production also comes with a short jingle added, which the result page says paid credits remove. Check auphonic.com/pricing for the current plans before you build a workflow around either.

## Step 3: name it, run it, read the result

Open Basic Metadata and type a title; Auphonic saves changes on this page by itself. Click Start Production. A box shows how much audio your free credits cover and warns that processing stops if the file is longer; our new account showed 2 hours. Click Start Production again.

Our 33-second clip finished in about ten seconds. The result page shows the output file, with its length, format and a Download button, and a waveform editor with the Output on top and your Input underneath. The line over the input is the gain curve: it raised the quiet host by about 22 dB and left the loud guest almost untouched. A blue notice says Includes Jingle because only free credits were used, which is why the file is a few seconds longer than the upload.

## Step 4: listen before you post

Download the file and play it from start to finish. The waveform looks right either way, so only listening tells you whether names sound clear and pauses sound natural. Use the audio check sheet linked above: speaker balance, noise, pauses, names and numbers, and whether the jingle is acceptable where you are posting.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Uploading a recording when not everyone on it agreed to be recorded or to the file being processed online.
- Posting without listening. A clean waveform does not tell you whether a name was clipped.
- Forgetting the jingle on a free production, then discovering it after the post went out.
- Planning around the transcript without checking that speech recognition needs paid credits.
- Changing every setting on the first run. The defaults did the job on our sample; change one thing at a time.

## Plans, data and what to check

Auphonic's free plan gives a monthly allowance of processing time (a new account showed credits for 2 hours when we ran it), and free productions carry a jingle. Productions are removed from Auphonic's servers after a while (the Productions page says 21 days for audio at the time of writing). Check auphonic.com/pricing and its terms before you use it with client recordings, and check what your company's data policy allows before you upload anything confidential.

## Step by step: Auphonic: Make a Recorded Webinar Sound Professional in 5 Minutes

All 11 steps of the interactive module, in order. In the module you watch each one, then do it yourself in a practice copy that checks your work.

### 1. Add the recording

1. **Choose the file.** This is Auphonic's new Production page. Maya has the webinar recording, **client-webinar-sample.mp3**. Click **Choose a file** to add it.
This is Auphonic. It's a website that cleans up audio. Maya has the recording from her client webinar. One speaker is quiet. The other is loud. And there's a hiss in the background.

### 2. Choose what to fix

2. **Look at Noise Reduction.** Noise Reduction is already on. Click its arrow to see the settings.
Under Processing, Auphonic has already switched on four fixes. First, noise reduction. It takes out hiss and hum, and keeps the voices.
3. **Look at the Adaptive Leveler.** The leveler is what fixes a quiet speaker next to a loud one. Click the arrow next to **Adaptive Leveler**.
Next, the adaptive leveler. This is the one that matters most here. It turns the quiet speaker up, and the loud speaker down, so people can hear both.
4. **Look at Loudness Normalization.** Loudness Normalization sets the final volume. The target is **-16 LUFS (Podcasts and Mobile)**. Click its arrow.
Then loudness normalization. It sets the final volume of the whole file. The target is minus sixteen, which is the usual level for podcasts, and for phones.
5. **Check Speech Recognition.** Maya also wants a transcript. Click **Speech Recognition and Automatic Shownotes**.
Maya would like a transcript too.

### 3. Name it and run it

6. **Open Basic Metadata.** The transcript needs paid credits, so skip it. Click **Basic Metadata** to name the production.
The yellow note says speech recognition is only for paying users. So Maya skips it for now. Auphonic still does the cleanup for free. Now give the job a name.
7. **Name the production.** Type **Q3 client webinar**.
   Q3 client webinar.
8. **Start Production.** Changes on this page save by themselves. Click **Start Production**.
Auphonic saves your changes as you go.
9. **Confirm.** Auphonic tells you how many free credits you have. Click **Start Production** again.
It tells you how much audio your free credits cover. A free account has two hours a month. This clip is thirty three seconds.

### 4. Check the result

10. **Read the gain curve.** It finished in about ten seconds. The top wave is the **Output**, the bottom wave is the **Input**. The line over the input is how much Auphonic turned each part up or down. Click the **+22.1 dB** line.
It's done in about ten seconds. The top wave is the cleaned up file. The bottom wave is what Maya uploaded. The line on the bottom is what Auphonic did. Where the host was quiet, it turned her up by twenty two decibels. Where the guest was loud, it left him alone.
11. **Download the result.** The two speakers are now about the same volume. Free productions get a short jingle added; paid credits remove it. Click **Download**.
Now both speakers are about the same volume, and the hiss is gone. One catch. A free production gets a short jingle added at the start. Paid credits remove it.

## Frequently asked questions

**How does the interactive lesson work?**

Each step is shown to you first (Watch). Then you do it yourself in a practice copy that checks every click (Your turn). If you get stuck, press Do it for me. It is a practice copy, so nothing is uploaded and no Auphonic account is touched.

**Is Auphonic part of Stepthrough?**

No. Auphonic is a separate, third-party product from auphonic.com. This lesson is free and teaches the steps as they appear on its website. To use it for real you need your own Auphonic account; check auphonic.com/pricing for its current plans.

**What does the Adaptive Leveler do?**

It balances the volume between speakers and within one speaker, so a quiet host and a loud guest end up at a similar level. In our sample it turned the quiet host up by about 22 dB.

**Can I get a transcript on the free plan?**

In our free account, Speech Recognition and Automatic Shownotes showed a note that it is only available for paying users. The audio cleanup ran without it.

**What is the jingle?**

A short sound added to productions that used only free credits. The result page says buying a subscription or one-time credits removes it, so listen for it before you publish a free production.
